Start an Event Catering Business - Ten Steps to Success

By Robert Sutherland

If you are searching for a small business opportunity in a growing industry and you are also passionate about food and entertaining then why not research the possibility of starting a catering business.

Here are ten steps to follow to help you to get your catering company started off successfully.

1) Research - Learn as much as possible about the catering business and how to oversee a successful catering business. Try to also learn about small business administration and marketing. Completing a course on business related subjects is one great way to ensure that you are ready. Research the industry in your city or region. Try to learn more about what the established operators are doing, how large your local market is and what different kinds of events you should be targeting. Interview friends who have used caterers before to try and better understand your target market.

2) Industry Experience - While most states don't require you to have any experience or qualifications to enter the catering business, if you have had experience working in the food, beverage and hospitality industries (or even with another catering company) you will have a big advantage.

3) Complying with Local Health Authorities - make sure that you have an in depth understanding of all the relevant local health and safety regulations that you must comply with as a catering business owner.

4) Food Preparation - Consider where you will prepare food for clients. Food can be prepared offsite or onsite and you will have to make sure that you have access to a fairly large kitchen if you are catering to events with large numbers attending.

5) Insurance Companies - Before starting up your company you must make yourself aware of the insurance policies that you will need in order to protect your business assets and your business liability in the case things go wrong and result in damages to individuals or property.

6) Planning a Menu - Learn about popular food trends, look at the menu offerings of other catering firms and begin to put together a variety of menus that you can market to clients.

7) If you don't have experience in the industry you should get some practice in by hosting a large event for friends and family members and catering to them. You will then be able to learn more about what it takes to prepare and serve food to large numbers.

8) A Business Name - Think of an appropriate name for your new business and how you will build a brand to distinguish your company from the competitors.

9) Start Up Financing - It is extremely useful if you understand exactly how much you will need in the way of start up financing so you should carefully write down all of your expected starting expenses.

10) The last stage in the planning phase of your catering company will be to write a solid business plan. Even if you don't need to prove your idea to partners or bankers, a plan is still an excellent way of getting all your ideas and research findings down on paper in one place.

If you follow the ten steps above before proceeding to start your event catering business you will be putting yourself in a position to succeed in this exiting industry. - 33383
