How to Shop for a Kitchen Knife Set

By Moses Harun

People have worked with knives for at least 2.5 million years. Naturally, since that was the Stone Age, hards materials including obsidians and flint were shaped into blades, while as time progressed, wood and bone were occasionally employed. Nowadays, knives could come in a whole universe of metal materials that span the gamut from the tried and true steel to new-fangled ceramics, carbon fiber and titanium. And one more improvement is that we can enjoy kitchen knife sets rather than simply one all-purpose tool.

Back in the 21st century, while you are thinking about investing in some kitchen knives through employing customer reviews as your basis, always read the reviews completely, specifically while you are ordering from a website and are unable to sample the knives for yourself. Useful customer reviews, be they positive or negative in tone, ought to describe the knives' traits with regard to functionality, materials and construction, weight and comfort in handing and use, and ease of maintenance.

Functionality

Most kitchen knife sets these days are sold in sets of 6-8 knives plus a storage block. You may be fooled into believing that the more, the merrier in your kitchen. Well, actually, you merely require three knives to be effective in your kitchen - the chef's knife, the paring knife and the utility knife. The rest - trimmers, clam and oyster knives, cook's knives, filet knives, and mezzaluna knives, among others - are interesting trimmings to the knife set yet can be done away with.

Materials and Construction

The knives in today's knife sets are crafted from several types of materials such as stainless steel and carbonized no-stain steel, titanium, ceramic and plastic as well as employing a host of production options to include forging, stamping and sintering. Any manufacturer's product description really should have pertinent data relative to materials and construction, since your choice will usually be dependent on them. For example, nearly all users will prefer working with forged knives as opposed to stamped knives, in the same way that titanium knives are selected over plastic knives in the general sense.

Weight and Comfort in Handing and Use

As a general rule, the lightness of the knife and the degree of comfort experienced when handling those knives have equal importance as the materials and construction of the knives. Thus, when studying reviews on kitchen knife sets, you have to hunt for phrases like "ease of use ", "lightweight" and "nicely scaled for the activity". Obviously, seeing as every person's hand is unique, what might be acceptable for one may not be acceptable for you although, at least, you should have a general idea.

Ease of Maintenance

Nobody wants to spend their days in their kitchen maintaining knives when they can do the cooking, don't you think? Therefore, you ought to read the product descriptions for information on care and correlate them against the consumers' experiences via their reviews. For instance, titanium knives are more convenient to sharpen than carbon steel blades.

Certainly, as regards a kitchen knife set, staying safe is better than being sorry. As you probably know, quite a few injuries come as many times from incorrect use of knives as from the knives' faulty materials and construction. Again, always study the reviews, attempt to hold the knives and try them out on cutting boards, if that is possible. At the end of the day, you might find that choosing the ideal knives could make your time spent in the kitchen easier, as well as let you look like a professional chef even when you only vaguely can tell the difference between croquettes and mashed potatoes. - 33383

Steps On Putting Up Trim

By Jean Parker

When you want to create the best trim of a door or window you should always be sure to have the right tools and purchase only products that are of good quality. With the vast array of wood choices this can be overwhelming to some but the secret to a great job completion is precision and patience.

When cutting the trim, it is easier to use a compound miter saw for the cuts. There are miter boxes that use a manual saw, and these can be fine if you only have a couple of cuts to make, but for larger projects, or if you just want to make your life easier, an electric compound miter saw is the best choice. When making the cuts, be sure to use the golden rule of any carpentry work; which states, measure twice, cut once. Following this rule will help you avoid a lot of bad cuts and mistakes. Remember, a piece of wood can always be cut shorter, but you cannot make it longer if it is cut too short.

Once you have decided on the type of trim you are going to purchase, you will than need to measure the length of the pieces that you will need. If you are purchasing from a home improvement store they sell it by the linear foot so you will have no problem getting the length that you need. When you are trimming a door or window the casing will look the same and should be cut into three or four sides at a 45 degree angle.

After being cut, the corners should be fitted together with a staple or nail so that they do not come apart once installed. This will keep the cracks of the joints at a minimum and make caulking the joints less visible. All of the visible joints should be caulked with a latex paintable caulk. This will hide the gap that any imperfections in the wall and wood show.

When you are ready to nail your frame to the wall you should do so with a nail gun for a more cleaner and smoother look. After you have installed your frame and finished your caulking you are then ready to paint the trim. If you have used a primed wood you can just choose you paint and start applying, however if you went with a bare wood you will need to prime it before you paint the trim to the color of your liking. - 33383

A Little Paint Goes A Long Way

By Jean Parker

The best part about redecorating a room is when it is finished and you get to stand back and admire all of the hard work that you put into it. A little sweat and elbow grease and usually more money than you originally planned. But as long as the end result is the desired result and you end up with a room that you love, then it was all worth it.

Although everyone wants to change their homes, they often feel that they do not have the money in their budgets. However, there are some simple things that can be done, in any room, that will make a dramatic change. The simplest thing that you can do is re-paint the room. Changing the color of the room will make it look crisp and new, it can completely change the way the room looks.

There are a few things to consider when painting. First, if you are painting a room that is newly remodeled and it will be a fresh coat of paint on new wood or drywall, you must use a primer. The most important thing to remember is to use a good, high quality primer. You can buy cheap thin primer, but you get what you pay for and it never covers the way it should. A thick quality primer is an important factor in the smoothness and look of the final coat of paint. Don't skimp on the primer.

Once you have finished the primer you will then need to apply your paint. You will want to make sure that you purchase a high quality paint, just as you did with the primer. Purchasing a paint that is of poor quality will end up costing you more money and time then would otherwise be necessary. By purchasing a cheap quality paint you will find that you will need to add more coats than would have been needed, or you may end up having to purchase new paint and starting from the beginning.

In addition to using good paint and good primer, invest a few extra dollars on some good rollers and decent brushes. Everything just ends up looking better and being done better when you start with quality products. It is just like anything else, the results you end up with are equal to the level of effort you put into it. - 33383

Keep A Kitchen Worth Loving

By Amy Stevens

Many of us wake up in the morning and grimly look at our kitchen with dismay. By the time you have conquered the pile of dishes in the sink, half of your morning is gone and you have no time or motivation to do anything else such as cook.

Many families have forgotten the days of after school snacks and chit chat in the kitchen or making family memories around the table at dinnertime. Mothers think they do not have time to cook or fuss with the dishes and clutter that seems to collect there. But many would be surprised how a few simple steps can help you make this space a place you and your family will love being. The kitchen should be a space in each family home where precious memories are made.

If your kitchen has not been touched in a while, you may need to start your cleaning up process with a trash bag. Go through the fridge and toss everything that is expired or old. Clear off the countertops and get rid of everything that is trash. You will soon find that the mess has cleared greatly.

Next take one counter at a time and clear it completely off. Using warm soapy water, completely wash the surrounding area and neatly put everything back in its place. Do this repeatedly until each countertop has been completely cleaned. Do the same with your fridge and cabinets. This may take you more than one day, but remember, baby steps will get you to your goal!

The sink is really the most important part. Soak it in a water and bleach solution for at least an hour, drain it, and rinse it well. Then you are ready to scrub it till it shines! If your sink is stainless steel, use a brillo pad to get in each of those little cracks. When you are finished, wipe it dry with a towel and stand back to admire your work. Amazing! Your sink will look like new again!

Once you have gotten your kitchen clean, you need to try to keep up with it on a daily basis. Take those few extra minutes after a meal to wash al the dishes and shine your sink, and empty the dishwasher first thing in the morning. Those few minutes will make a world of difference in how the room looks and how you feel about it. You will find yourself and your family much more inspired to cook and spend time there.

Your kitchen should be a reflection of who you are, just as any other part of your home should be. Use colors that make you love and decorate to suite your taste. Surround yourself with things you love, keep the space clean, and you will love it! - 33383

Simple Ways To Decorate Kitchens

By Amy Stevens

A few simple additions to your kitchen can create a room that will be welcoming to guests and make you feel more at home while there. Kitchens are very basic rooms so a little goes a long way in sprucing them up.

First consider the windows. If you have a kitchen window over the sink, consider a light colored set of curtains. Select a shade that will match the paint or wallpaper but will also stand out. A subtle print is usually a nice choice. It can be a pattern that is kitchen related, like little spatulas or pots and pans. Or you can go with a theme that you personally like, such as cows or gingham. You will want to choose a light fabric to allow sunlight to come through. Bold prints or dark shades will darken the room.

For other kitchen windows, such as by a kitchenette table, consider thin Venetian blinds. You may also want to add a decorative curtain on each end for an accent. These curtains do not need to ever be closed and can just rest on edges of the windows. If you have the sink window too, you can use the same material as you do for that window.

Matching kitchen towels are a nice touch. A pair of towels that go with your theme can hang on the oven door. These can be strictly for show and not used. Often, when looking for a towel set, you'll find a pot holder or two to the go with them. Potholders can also be left out for decoration on open counter space. If there is no spare space, look for a place on a wall where you can hang them. Use a different set of potholders for cooking so you don't ruin the decorative ones.

Floor mats can also be selected to match the theme. Again pick something light to keep the kitchen bright. Don't overdo it with mats. Two little ones for the areas in front of the stove and the sink are sufficient. Or, if you have a small kitchen, pick a slightly larger one to go right in the center.

Little touches can make all the difference. A few magnets on the fridge are nice. If they can go with your theme, great. Don't stick too many on there or it will just look messy. A whiteboard for messages or a calendar will be good on an empty wall. A plant or fruit basket can be set out. Just make sure it is somewhere convenient where it is easily seen but not in the way when you're trying to make dinner.

And to really make kitchens nice, find a home for everything! Don't let your kitchen counters become storage areas. A few appliances that you use every day can stay out, like a toaster, coffee maker. If you don't use the blender a lot, stick it in a cabinet. And definitely have the 'junk drawer.' This is where you can put all the things you want in the kitchen but don't really have a home. Bottle openers, pens, recipes, chip clips and all those goodies can be kept in one place to keep the kitchen tidy and looking nice. - 33383

The shape of your room is important, as it needs to accommodate all your appliances. Here is where the professional kitchen designer will be of immense value.

Simple Guide To A Clean And Organized Kitchen

By Amy Stevens

Straightening your kitchen cabinets and getting everything clean doesn't have to be a headache. It will only take a few hours and is not a hard task. Set aside a day when you can devote this time to getting it done right.

First of all, take care of all the normal cleaning routines, like getting the dishes into the dishwasher and putting away any clean ones. Then give the kitchen a good scrubbing. Grab some anti-bacterial cleaner and wash the counters, tables, cabinet faces and the walls. Take up the kitchen mats and shake them outside to remove dust and crumbs of food. The sweep and mop the floor.

Take the mats and shake them outside to remove crumbs and dust. Then wash them in the washer on a gentle cycle. Hang to dry. Hanging outside is best if possible; if not, over a bathroom shower rack will be fine.

Since the counters are clean now, you can safely take out glasses and mugs and put them on the countertop. Rearrange these by putting them in rows. Placing them upside down will keep dust out. If you decide to store them upside down, always make sure that they are completely dry before you put them away. If they are wet at all, moisture will get trapped and mold will form.

As for pots and pans: take them all out and clean those cabinets. Try to store these by stacking smaller ones into larger ones. Then place the lids nearby. The same can go for frying pans. The largest pan can go on the bottom and the others layered on top.

If possible, use a separate cabinet for baking pans and cake pans. Try to do as much stacking as possible here as well. The shapes will all be different so it won't be as easy as with the pans. But try different combinations until you are utilizing the space the best way.

Baking sheets, pizza pans and oven roasters should all fit in the drawer under the stove. It is really not a good idea to store pans in the oven. You never know when you or somebody else may forget the pans are in there and turn the oven on to preheat. It is better to store as much as possible under the oven or in cabinets.

Determine whether you are using the drawers as you should be. If you want to rearrange which drawers hold what, do that now. Spatulas and potholders are ideal in drawers closer to the stove. Larger drawers are good for gadgets, while a small one is good for silverware.

Once the cabinets are clean, keeping the kitchen clean and organized will be easier. Now you know where everything is. Make an effort to always put things back every time in the future. Then you won't have to do this task again! - 33383

Bringing A Room Together

By Jean Parker

Sometimes all a room needs to be finished is to add the perfect accent to pull everything together. Sometimes the great accent is a painting with all the perfect colors or a subject that brings out the theme of the room. Sometimes the perfect accent is a table or a rug, it doesn't matter what it is but it should be a focal point that ties the room together.

Getting the right look to a room can start with the dcor or it can start with the paint or the architectural details. A perfect built in bookshelf or mantle around the fire place can be the thing to build around. The accessories can accent the way the room is built, not just what you put in it. The wood work and brick and tile work in a room is the perfect thing to get started with for picking out a theme or focus.

Beautiful wood work is a time consuming and expensive and should be something that you showcase and use to the advantage of a room. Don't cover up the architectural details of your house; use them to your advantage to make the home stand out. Even though it seems like an easy thing to do, and in some instances it is, trim work like crown molding and chair railing can turn a room into something beautiful and functional and exciting. The strategic use of trim, not over using it, can make a room look stylish and adds a decorative and architectural detail that can make a big difference in the appearance and feel of a room.

It can be a difficult task to get your colors, theme and patterns to fit together in one room. The most time consuming part of redecorating is simple picking out the right color scheme for your room. Once you have the colors you desire you should than look to magazines, internet resources and even ask others who have recently decorated to find the perfect furnishings and accents to bring it all together.

Don't be afraid to experiment and put things together that are new and that you might not be sure about. The worse thing that can happen is that it doesn't work and you have to try something else. No big deal, but you will never know what works and what doesn't work without trying. - 33383

Why Should You Even Consider Getting a Food Processor?

By Moses Harun

Various Cuisinart food processors are available for purchase, and it's extremely difficult to select the most effective of the many Cuisinart processors, such as the Cuisinart BFP-703CH Blender/Food Processor, because a lot depends on the users' individual requirements. Several processors were given customer complaints seeing as the ingredients were either too soupy or too chunky, but often this will be caused by not following the explanatory pamphlet that Cuisinart has provided.

On top of that, some were described as particularly difficult to clean completely. Several of the better Cuisinart food processors received compliments in cases where a higher percentage of the peices were detachable and as a consequence easier to cleanse, rather than the machines that had used one-piece construction of some of their pieces.

The Cuisinart DLC-X Plus Food Processor is produced for customers who cater or own small restaurants. It has a bowl made to contain 20 cups, three slicing disks for three different types of slices, in addition to a shredding disk, a dough hook, and additionally has a "whole-sized fruit and vegetable feed tube", even though if you don't routinely prepare enormous amounts of food in your kitchen, this machine will not be especially practical for the home cook, though it is highly rated by users in just about every test performed.

Many people are highly appreciative of the Cuisinart DLC-2014 Power Prep Plus since it includes a large 14 cup bowl, as a result it can easily process three pounds of bread dough, or fourteen cups of sauce. The drawback is that it sells for a good chunk of change, although if you are looking for the very "best" machine that Cuisinart could offer the professional chef, this could justify the cost. Those who have employed this machine state that it is particularly good at slicing and dicing; they appreciated the extra capacity, as well as its outstanding performance while kneading dough. It effortlessly accomplished most heavy-duty chores. Most people reported that they were rather taken aback that this product had a three-year warranty from Cuisinart as opposed to the usual one-year warranty which was always standard for this company's food processors.

The Cuisinart Model # DLC-8S is regarded as a custom food processor. It provides an exclusively designed cover in addition to a over-sized feed tube which has a very handy top for safe chopping and kneading. Every one of these capabilities are driven by Cuisinart's industrial quality motor, that so many cooks love on account of the power that it provides for the busy cook. This 11-cup appliance has been recognized to be a powerhouse that is engineered for both ease of use as well as giving you years of use. Most absolutely love the oversized "whole-sized fruit and vegetable feed tube" as listed above. It has a full 5-year motor warranty yet only a limited 3-year warranty which applies to the entire unit. Another great model is the Cuisinart BFP-703CH Blender/Food Processor.

Cuisinart DLC-10S is a slightly smaller device for cooks who do not need the jumbo machines which could handle restaurant-sized jobs. This example is a 7-cup volume food processor that is considered to be intended to handle the normal kitchen needs for cutting, pureeing and additionally kneading although the volumes need to be kept small. It boasts a unlimited five-year warranty regarding the motor while it includes a conditional 3-year warranty regarding the complete unit. Quite a few of the complaints on this unit have come from people who think that the replacement parts and the disks and blades have proved particularly costly. - 33383

How To Resurface The Kitchens Cabinets

By Amy Stevens

It can be very expensive to remodel kitchens. By the time that fixtures and appliances have been replaced you will have spent thousands of dollars. Instead of remodeling, consider simply refinishing the cabinets in the kitchen. This is often a excellent way to give the room a new look at a very low cost.

The following guide will lead you as your refinish the kitchen cabinets.

Begin by removing all the kitchen cabinet hardware. Since there are many screws, a power screwdriver is often helpful. This will save a lot of fatigue in the project.

Any good degreaser will remove oils, greases and waxes from the wood. It is important to include this step to ensure that a new finish sticks to the wood without peeling. Oils and greases are simply a by-product of cooking through the years and tend to buildup on every surface in the kitchen.

If you find all the wood in good shape, then you may only need to lightly sand areas that are rough because of peeling and bubbled paint. When you complete the sanding step, you can pick up the dust using a wet/dry vacuum. If there is other dust left on the project, then you should use a tack cloth to collect any other remaining dust from the project.

As to refinishing, at this point there are two options. The surface can be stripped to bare wood and can be refinished for a natural wood look or you can paint. Stripping cabinets can be a very tedious job that takes several days and you may not be able to use the kitchen for several days.

If you choose the refinish option, you will have to remove the dust again after sanding and before sanding. Stain and polyurethane are needed to complete the project.

The other option is to paint the cabinets. With this choice, you will apply a bonding agent by use of a clean dry paintbrush. Follow the directions of the bonding agent as you then apply enamel paint to the cabinet surfaces.

Once paint has been applied, you will want to keep everything as dust free as possible. This will ensure that the paint dries with a smooth flat finish.

Once all the finish is dry, you are ready to apply the new hardware to complete your kitchen makeover. Be careful if using a power screwdriver at this point, as one slip can ruin the new finish you have worked to create. - 33383

How To Build A Bedroom Cupboard

By Julian Venter

If you have the correct materials and tools it's quite simple to build your own bedroom cupboards. The way to make this process simpler is to learn a few tricks and I'm going to show them to you. I'm going to give you some tips on how to build bedroom cupboard the easy way and if you're teachable you won't have a problem.

Let's assume that you already invested in materials and chipboard. You would also need hardware like PVC legs, hinges, oval tubes and chipboard screws. You can either buy diy bedroom cupboard or work out your own cut list to get yr wood cut and edged.

All good? Let's begin. Now you need to assemble the cupboards. The holes for the chipboard screws need to be drilled 8mm away from the edge of the side. This is so that it screws into the middle of the bottom or top. Remember that the thickness of the bottom and top is 16mm.

Them you will have to assemble the bedroom cupboard by fixing the tops and bottoms to the sides. The 6x40 chipboard screw is one of the strongest screws to use. If you want the side to line up in front with the tops and bottoms effortlessly you can place them on a piece of chipboard. A great tool that also makes life very easy is the nail gun. You will still have to use a 6x40 screw to fix the cupboard pieces together as the nail isn't strong enough.

After you've assembled the bedroom cupboard and fixed the backing onto it you can make the shelf nail template. If you have 4 shelves you will have 5 spaces between them. Let's say your cupboard is 2200mm high. You internal height will be 2168mm because you have to subtract the bottom(16mm thick) and the top(16mm thick) from the height of the cupboard. Each shelf is also 16mm thick. If there is 4 shelves you will have to subtract 16mmx4=64mm off the internal dimensions of the cupboard. Now subtract 64mm from 2168mm and divide it by 5 and you'll get 420mm. That is the space between each shelf.

To make the shelf nail template you can use a piece of melamine that is 2100mmx100mm and make marks that are 420mm spaced from each other. Make sure the marks are in the middle of the plank. Take a chipboard screw and screw it into the plank so that it counter sinks through by 3mm. After you've placed the template on the bottom of the cupboard against the side of the cupboard on the inside, take a hammer and knock the plank against the side so that it makes marks. Do this in all four corners of the cupboard, hammer shelf nails in on the marks and put the shelves in place.

All you have to do now is hang the doors. To line the hinges on the door up perfectly when you fix them place a plank across the hinges so the plank pushes against all the hinges and forces them all to go straight. Now you can fix the hinges to the cupboard doors and hang them up.

That is how easy it really is to build your own bedroom cupboard. All the best with your bedroom cupboard project and hope you enjoyed the content. - 33383

Butcher Block In The Home

By Arthur Butler

Butchers block in the home is generally seen in areas in the kitchen such as a cutting board or tabletop in addition to being used in countertops and traditional chopping boards. Usually, a butchers board is created from sugar maple, which is renowned for its hardness and attractive looks. In the old days, it was commonly seen as a butcher's block or meat processing plant.

Today, it seems that it is generally everywhere one would care to look in a home's kitchen. There are usually two different styles of board known as edge grain and end grain. End grain is made by the gluing of wooden pieces so that the fiber is perpendicular to the chopping surface. Usually, these sorts of boards in commercial use are at least 4 inches thick.

And end grain board is highly prized by most cooks because the board is able to stand up to endless knife blade impacts. The impact is absorbed by the surface, which allows the edge of the knife to penetrate between the wooden fibers. This helps to prevent the knife edge from becoming dull quickly and also helps the surface to stand up to gouges and nicks.

Like its sister, the edge grain board is made in almost the same way -- by taking pieces of wood and gluing them together -- but the fibers are laid out parallel to the surface and not perpendicular. This makes the block quite a bit easier to manufacture, and hence less costly to buy.

As far as refinishing of a surface, and end grain block can be done numerous times. Due to the less expensive nature of edge grain manufacture, it is generally the case that the block can be refinished only a certain number of times. Both boards undergo high-pressure gluing to keep the wooden pieces together. End grain is more durable than edge grain, and both will need re-oiling on occasion.

There are many homes that have some sort of butcher's board surface somewhere in the kitchen. The wood can be used to create an attractive tabletop or countertop -- which is where it is seen most often these days -- or used in the classic traditional chopping board that has legs. Compared to other materials, it has a relatively low price and generally equally long service life. - 33383

Kitchen Showrooms: 3-d Purchasing In The Shop Or Online

By Amy Stevens

Using kitchen showrooms to prepare for a kitchen remodeling project or just for replacing a specific piece of cabinetry or work surface is a great way to see what your finished project will look like. Ideas sometimes don't look as good in real life as they did in your mind's eye. By eliminating the non-starters in the idea department first, you will save a lot of time in planning your project.

Building centers and home dcor stores often have showrooms for kitchens. They feature cabinets, appliances floor coverings and even lighting fixtures. This type of arrangement provides you with a complete sense of what your finished kitchen could look like. You see the colors as they blend with each other or are softened by the surface textures.

Real life showrooms are also helpful to better visualize the space in the cupboards, drawers and cabinets. You can check the interior of the pantry unit and decide whether your best punch bow will fit on the Lazy Susan in the corner cupboard. You can determine if your current appliances will work with the new cabinetry and counter tops. Of course, if you are going for a full remodel, you may be replacing major appliances as well.

Appliances are another thing that is more easily studied by checking them out in person. Are the burners properly spaced? Is the oven at a height that makes it easy to access? Are the heat controls easily readable?

In your current kitchen do you keep small appliances out of sight in an appliance garage? If so, is the same arrangement available in the model kitchen? Bring a tape measure and spend time checking heights of cabinet shelves and depth of drawers.

You can do some of your planning and idea gathering procedures by visiting a online showroom. Internet options are much more plentiful than on-site showrooms. Some of the websites provide interactive choices so you can pick colors, textures and floor coverings. Software can be found online or in the electronics department.

Online kitchen showrooms offer an almost unlimited number of options for kitchen design. Pick a cabinet design from one site and hardware from another. Choose just the right colors to match the cabinet finish and floor finish. - 33383

A Tuscan Style Kitchen

By Boris Walkowski

One of the most well-liked themes for the kitchen is the Tuscan style. We often see this in Italian restaurants, often seen as homely eateries. The Tuscan design is fairly inexpensive and easy to do with the right color, lighting, accessories and materials.

For colors, earth tones rule! Tuscan design is one kind that can easily remind you of grandma's home-made bread or lazy summer afternoons. It is cozy and pleasant. The colors used are nature-colors that are seen in abundance in the landscapes of Tuscany. Think of colors that give you instant warmth and comfort, and you're on the right track.

Like the Majolica pottery it is important to use terracotta. This is an important substance in Italian life and is used not only for decor but also for cooking and storage. Other natural materials like marble, slate and granite will also lend to the Italian ambiance you desire through the texture they provide.

Accessories are quite simple for a Tuscan design - pottery, jars, wooden bowls, bottles and condiments for the Italian cuisine are staples of an Italian kitchen. Herbs are great additions too. When placed in a pretty container, it becomes a decor in itself and a great sensory stimulator. The kitchen will smell so good!

There aren't many accessories needed. The natural kinds are a plus actually, such as ingredients for Italian foods like peppers, garlic, herbs, etc. Pottery, wooden bowls and jars also make up a replica of an old-style kitchen in Italy. See how typical Italian kitchens have loads of ingredients stacked for all to see. Baskets of vegetables, jars full of condiments, over-sized containers; these things make the place look more homely.

The flooring is an important element in achieving the desired Tuscan style. Marble flooring is the top choice but if it's beyond your price range, an alternative is to use stone tiles.

An area rug with similar homely qualities will polish the new kitchen look. Apart from easy maintenance, an area rug adds comfort to the space. Cooking has never been more pleasant with a soft mat for the feet. It makes for a great centerpiece.

Italians are famous for their mouth-watering food and strong family ties. The kitchen followed after such a beautiful culture will also carry the semblance of love for family and food. An Italian-inspired kitchen has an old charm that will make family get-togethers and cooking a wonderful experience. - 33383

The History Of The Table

By Alexander Stone

Tabula, a Latin word has been in existence for at least 2000 years. The word tabula means, a board, a plank or a flat top piece. In Spanish the word for table is mesa,(from Latin mensa) and in old English it was, bord, which ultimately became table. Tables come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on their use. But all of them no matter what their size and shape have ultimately one use, that is, to support objects or place objects at a convenient distance from the ground. Before tables were invented humans most probably used any convenient object to place something, like a rock, or maybe just put it on the ground or floor.

The earliest evidence of table use comes from Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese literature. Egyptian Pharaohs used tables that looked like stools unlike the tables that we use today. Carved from stone or smelted metal, these furniture were mainly used in food holding. Chinese tables were barely off the ground. They were used not just for eating but also writing, painting, and sketching. Made from wood, these tables did not have room for chairs. Users had to sit on the floor to use them. Koreans and Japanese probably copied the Chinese practice of sitting on the floor facing their guests while eating.

In Europe, the Greeks and Romans also had their contribution in the development of the table. They also used their tables for eating, but the Greeks added an innovation to their tables. Their tables could be kept under their beds. Marble, metal, or wood were the primary materials that they were made with. Romans contributed to table design with their large tables that may on occasion have 6 legs. Shaped like semi-circles, they were called Mensa Lunata.

Probably, the design of the farmhouse dining table was based on the Mensa Lunata. Both tables are huge. Original farmhouse tables could hold 12 to about 14 guests. Pine wood or oak wood were used for their construction, which reflects the area that these tables were first made. A rustic design was also often finished on such tables. This hides the wear and tear that can come from tough farm use.

The people who first used such tables preferred substance over stylishness for their tables. Made in plain rectangles or in circular or square shapes for the smaller ones, these tables were nevertheless heavier than ordinary. Moving them is a chore. Many such tables come with a pre-weathered look despite the fact that they have never been near any farm or cowboy since they were first made. - 33383

Kitchen Sinks: Visual Appeal And Usefulness

By Manuel Vintagoli

The variety that is available in kitchen sinks today is truly amazing. Sinks have always had a practical application, but now they are beautiful as well as practical. The materials and colors that are available to make modern sinks give both usefulness and elegance to an important feature of the kitchen.

Sink Composition

The importance of a sink in every kitchen cannot be disputed. Virtually every working kitchen has at least one sink, many have two or even three sinks. Sinks are used for cleaning and preparation of foods. They are also important for cleaning dishes and utensils. The number and types of sinks will depend upon the use that is planned for the kitchen space. Variations in the shape and size will depend on what functions are to be performed in a particular sink.

Sinks placed in kitchens are usually square or rectangular, but less often they are oval or irregular in shape. The fittings cam be made of stainless steel, sometimes with chrome platting. More exotic materials are available, but are much less common. The sinks are formed of metals including stainless steel or sometimes iron. Man made made materials such as Formica or granite sinks are sometimes possible to find. The sink may be formed in one unit with no separation from the counter itself, or may be placed in an opening formed in the counter.

Sink Design

A single bowl sink works well when it is used mainly for hand washing dishes and food preparation utensils before placing them in a dishwasher. The dishwasher is placed under the counter and the sink is placed on the counter near to the dishwasher. This option is good when kitchen space is limited.

If you must use a sink for dish washing items by hand, a double sink is perhaps your best choice. You put dish water in one side of the sink and rinse water in the second compartment. A dual compartment sink is useful when there is preparation needed on one side and clean foods are placed on the other for further processing. If there is more than two sink compartments, a garbage disposal may be attached to one of the units. With multiple sinks, each compartment may be a different size and used for different purposes.

Vegetable prep sinks may be a separate unit from other sinks even within the same kitchen. Because they are usually smaller, they can be appropriate for uses besides vegetable preparation. They can be placed in a kitchen island in a wet bar or entertainment center. These sinks are often even more decorative than a standard kitchen sink and may be selected as much for their looks as for their functionality.

Faucets and Taps

It is important that fittings for sinks be selected for their function in the same way that sinks are selected. Some fittings need to allow more space below the tap for filling large containers. Faucets for hot and cold flow are more common, but some fittings feature a single temperature control. The fittings may come with or without a separate spray unit.

When designing your new kitchen or planning a major kitchen renovation, kitchen sinks are a major part of the design. Determine what the major uses of the kitchen will be and plan the sink design and fittings around the usage. There is no reason why the sink cannot be beautiful as well as useful. - 33383

Information On How To Use Granite Tiles In Kitchens And Bathrooms

By Jeremy Pabloccis

Anyone who is thinking about materials to use on flooring and walls should think about granite tiles. It does not matter whether you are using them in a kitchen, bathroom or entryway. There are a few things that you need to know about the variety of sizes, shapes and colors that are available as well as where to find the best deals. Then, you can feel confident that you have made the best choice for the rooms in your home.

One of the first things you will need to decide is what materials you want to use for your kitchen or bathroom. The area that you will be using the tiles on will help to dictate whether you want to use marble, granite, ceramic or porcelain tiles. You may find that different materials also have different finishes which can change the look and durability of the tile itself. Durability is an important consideration since you do not want to be replacing chipped or broken tiles. Learning about the properties of different tiles is important to ensure you make the right choice for the area you are tiling.

If you want a flooring material that is almost universally durable and hard wearing, you may want to look at granite tiles above certain other tiling materials. This is because they are much harder and will stand up to a lot more activity than many marble tiles will. They are less porous than many marble tiles and this also goes a long way to making them suitable for use in a bathroom or kitchen.

One advantage of granite tile versus ceramic or porcelain tile is the coloring of the tile itself. It goes all the way through the tile rather than being limited to the top layer. If the granite tile chips the underlying color will not be bright white. This is often the case with tiles made from ceramics or porcelain which are only glazed on top with color. If you are someone who anticipates that a floor may take a certain amount of abuse, this is a definite advantage.

If you are looking at granite for a tiling material you may be surprised to find a wide range of colors and sizes. This makes them a very versatile choice for any room in your home. If you think that large tiles are not the right choice you can often find smaller tiles in the same color or shape that might be a better match for your home. You may also be interested in tiling an area using a variety of different tiles in the same area. This is rapidly becoming a very popular and trendy way to decorate your floor or walls. You may want to look for some professional decorating advice if you choose to do this.

When it is time to purchase your tiles you should look in home improvement centers and in home decorating supply stores. There are also websites that you can use to locate tiles in a range of materials. These can often give you a good savings but you may want to look at granite tiles physically before you make your ultimate choice. You also need to remember that with natural materials, the tiles can often range in color from tile to tile. This means that the look that you will get will not be totally uniform but it will be beautiful.

If you are installing tiles they are fairly easy to do yourself. You simply prepare the sub floor that the tiles will lay on. Make sure it is level since this can cause tiles to crack. It needs to be clean so that the tile adhesive can stick properly. Then, the tiles are laid down. If you are using sheets of connected tiles, the spacing is already predetermined. Tiles need to be placed with a small gap between them. This is where grout will go to seal the floor and make it durable. Once the adhesive has dried, you simply work grout over the tiles and force it down between them. The tiles are wiped clean and when the grout has dried, the tiled area is finished. You may need to cut around furniture or electrical outlets and wall switches. This can be done with special tile cutting tools that you can purchase or rent.

As you can see, tiles are easy to install. It is simply a matter of choosing which you want to use. Whether that means ceramic, marble or porcelain tiles is up to you. Your preferences and the area that they are being used in should always be your first choice rather than what is popular or trendy. - 33383

Your Kitchen's Wall And Floor Tiles : Utilizing Tiles To Transform Any Kitchen

By Param Punya

Tiles are so important to kitchen decor that they can literally make or break a kitchen. One of the reasons for such immense power is that tiles are very versatile. They come in such myriad sizes, shapes, colors and texture that millions of beautiful patterns can be woven out of them. If tiles are given a prominent role in kitchen decor then no two kitchens would look alike.

Kitchen tile ideas

To give the kitchen its desired appearance use different tiles made for ceramic, glass or stone. Have a kitchen floor color that contrasts with the door. Wall, floor and working surface colors should not be matching. You will make the right impact if you go for contrasting and accented colors. Do not forget to color the grouting. A contrasting grouting color, while adding to the appearance of the kitchen, exposes grouting faults. A coordinated grouting color gives the tile work an unbroken look.

Different kinds of tiles are used in different parts of the kitchen. Tiles that are easy to clean and take care are used for the backsplash. For flooring tiles that can withstand wear and tear and last long must be used. This is main reason why glass is used only as accents on floors. Tiles that become slippery like glazed tiles are also not suitable for the floor. Color of floor tiles is also important. Contrasting dark floor tiles make the kitchen look bigger

Walls are the right place to weave your best patterns. They provide enough space for a pattern of your choice, if it is affordable. The counter top tiles should be able to stand up to the high heat and be strong, relatively long lasting, non-porous and fairly easy to clean. - 33383

If You Are Updating Your Kitchen: Check Here

By Jean Parker

You might assume a kitchen renovation will be expensive, but it doesn't always have to cost you an arm and a leg. After watching some of those home improvement shows on television, you're probably under the impression that every kitchen renovation costs between $20,000 and $30,000 or more. However, that doesn't have to be the case. You can often work with existing kitchen features or do a partial renovation and still get a fantastic looking product for a much lower price. Here are some kitchen renovation ideas that can make your space look fabulous but leave your pocketbook relatively unscathed.

Cabinets This is one of the most important aspects of your kitchen and its look overall. Usually they are one of the main focus points so spending the right amount of time and focus on them is important to the look. They are also one of the most expensive parts of redoing your kitchen unfortunately. You may however though be able to work with the ones that you already have. Maybe not always, but a lot of the time you can come up with a brand new look with the same old wood. You can paint or if they are painted now, strip the paint and stain the wood to your liking. Also, new fixtures can be a huge difference.

Appliances There isn't much you can do with old appliances to make them look new again, however; you don't always have to feature fancy, top-of-the-line, stainless steel products to complete your kitchen renovation. Sometimes you can go with more average appliances that have the high-end look and appeal, but are not accompanied by the high-end price tag. You may also avoid purchasing new appliances by focusing on other kitchen features, such as floors, countertops, and cabinets. This way you can mask the age of older appliances by drawing attention toward newly upgraded areas.

Sinks Sinks can be troublesome when it comes to kitchen renovations -- especially if they are not stainless steel. Enameled sinks can scratch, chip, stain, and generally look worn over time, but may not be in overall bad shape when it comes to their use. If this is the case, you may want to consider re-coating the surface of your sink with fresh epoxy paint or a similar refinishing product. You can hire a company to do this, or save yourself money by purchasing a refinishing kit and attempting it yourself.

Paint A fresh coat of paint can make all of the difference in a room and the house overall. You can do the trim or the color in every room. Or you can do white walls even with just an accent color on one of them which makes it stand out more and gives the room a little bit of character. - 33383

What Makes The Nonstick Pan So Special

By Alexander Stone

If like me, when you think of pancakes or omelettes you think of sticking, burnt food, that always seems to get stuck no matter how you cook them. Well really there is no longer any need, technology has allowed us this wonderful invention call non-stick pans.

This has to be a God-sent thing. No more scrubbing, scraping and leaving-it-to-soak when using this kind of pan. It is not new, but its popularity is continuously rising as more people are finding out the benefits of using it. It comes in different sizes and shapes and is very popular in kitchens that turn out eggs into omelettes. Having used these wonderful pans myself, I would never look back. You may be skeptical about judging the no-more-sticking pan but rest assured this is amazing. In fact, it has to be the ultimate item in cooking. I actually enjoy cooking now, unlike before where I always see it as a chore, because I know what the end result will be.

Now I know that it may be difficult to tell just by looking at a pan, whether it is in fact non-stick. There is one way in which these fantastic pans are different, some contain a red spot in the middle of the frying pan, this is what heats up and makes the non-stick, not stick.

Nonstick frying pans and saucepans are quite expensive, especially if you they are Teflon-manufactured. Teflon is the original designer of these special pans. Interior Design Ideas

By Michael James

Redecorating your house isn't all that easy and it becomes even less so when you are stuck for ideas. The only way to really get over this problem in interior design ideas is to sit back, put your feet up and have a cup of coffee.

I'm not kidding, there's really no substitute for getting a new perspective on things, like taking a break from everything for example. In the first place, you become more relaxed, and in the second place a steaming cup of tea or coffee is always welcome.

Now that you're sitting down comfortably and are suitably relaxed, close your eyes and picture the room that you want to redecorate. Even if you are redecorate more than one room, it's always a good idea to start with one room first, working your way logically through to the next one and then the next one.

Before you commence your journey through the maze of interior design ideas, get yourself a notebook and pen so that you can jot down any inspirational ideas you have before they are forgotten

So, simply sit back and imagine the room in your mind. Try to see it as you want it to look. And if that's too hard, first try to replace separate parts of your room or articles in it. This is always a good method of working. But, if you've still got a mental drought on interior design ideas, leaf through some interior design catalogues beforehand so that you have at least some basic ideas of what you can do to change your room.

The interior design catalogues need not be anything more grand than your free local department store catalogue, turned to the home furnishing pages. Then again, nowadays you also get specialist stores which deal solely with the redecorating of your home. If you have the time, a quick trip down to one of these might also help to end the dearth on interior design ideas, and will probably get you started.

These stores will have decorated sets of several designs, giving you a good idea of what your room can look like if you bought those materials. However, if you're going to go to one of those shops, expect to spend some money, as no matter how hard you try to keep a tight hand on your wallet, you'll always find something you want to buy.

This is not always a bad thing, but unless you watch out you could end up buying things you don't really need and without a proper idea of what you want the room to look like, it can turn out disastrous. Don't worry though, just keep your mental image in mind, you can go back home and make a start on redecorating your rooms the way you want to.

Furthermore, now that you've been able to get a few interior design ideas of what you want your rooms to look like, your whole redecorating project ought to be that much easier and that much more fun too. - 33383

By Hubert Miles

Many buyers are looking for not only a good buy, but a home with modern updates meet their demands. They are often willing to pay more, if they are able to get what they are looking for in a home. Kitchen renovations go a log way in meeting these demands.

Buyers love modern kitchens that offer both space and a degree of elegance. Items like stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, and custom cabinets are items that today's shoppers are looking for. These important selling features add value to the home and help your home make a good first impression.

Make a point you remain on par with other homes in your neighborhood. You don't need to over improve because it may be hard to receive the extra value back once the home sells. The improvements had better stay within the style and area restraints of other homes inside the neighborhood. If the kitchen in your home is little, opening up the kitchen by taking out a wall or an unneeded island helps small kitchen look larger.

One technique you will be able to use to see what refurbishments you should do is to look at other homes available in your neighborhood. Look at what other homeowners are doing to sell their home. Then goto your local hardware store that sells kitchen appliances, cabinets, and fixtures to view see what options are available and view some design books for ideas. Many of these stores have a list of installers that can also quote you on what it will cost for your project.

When shopping on a budget, Home Depot or Lowe's are good places to visit. They offer very competitive prices due to their immense buying power. Their staff can answer design questions and show you display items to help get your imagination stirring. They have nearly all appliances and fixtures in stock every day, but if you do pick out something that has to be special ordered they can usually have in a couple of days. If you are purchasing new cabinets or counter tops, a contractor will need to visit your home to take measurements before submitting the order.

When renovating the kitchen, remember a clean professional job goes a long way. Unless you have construction experience, a kitchen renovation is not a do it yourself job. The cost of the project will likely pale in comparison to the amount gained on the added value.

Remember keep it simple. Simple, elegant and clean lines does not mean the kitchen has to be bland and boring. Many small areas can be very inviting through the use of color on the walls or attractive modern tile work.
