Your Contemporary Kitchen - The Minimalistic Design For Your Busy Family

By Matthew Kerridge

So many architects today love designing super modern homes. And with a modern home comes a contemporary kitchen with it's smooth and sleek look. It's actually wonderful to see how kitchens evolve with home design.

So today more than ever, a modern kitchen would look something like this:

The kitchen designers of today think along the lines of less is more. They would purposefully design a kitchen were there is very little clutter space. They would include geometric and liner patterns which tend to flow into each other creating the illusion of solid walls or spaces. In this type of kitchen everything is recessed and nothing sticks out or is eye catching.

What they have done is to take all our storage units and recessed them into beautiful looking surfaces like stainless steel or dark woods. Now all your sore thumbs are hidden. You don't have any handles or latches protruding and can just gently give a door a push and it will open up without any squeaks or croaks. They have managed to create a look that defies space. Smooth surfaces with sold lines in uninterrupted space.

Color does not really feature a lot in this type of kitchen. Because there are virtually no objects on the surfaces, you don't really need to worry about color other than cabinets and storage units. If you do need some color, have a vase with long stemmed flowers which you can place somewhere as a focal point.

A smooth and sleek kitchen also has to have ultra modern lighting. You could accentuate the entire room by installing lighting in different shades of pastels. Here your lighting would be recessed and no wall lamps or structures can protrude. Take care to have a bright light on the surfaces used most for food preparation.

Designs around floors have also taken a huge jump in the 21st century. Now it is essential to have a linear floor design as well. Some even use steel sheeting combined with wood and ceramic to give a textured look on the floor but keeping it one-dimensional at all times. To get this type of look in a small kitchen you might want to break down a wall that separates the kitchen with another room. Here you can create a spacious flow that will extend into say the dinning room or lounge area.

A contemporary kitchen design has the busy executive in mind. It provides a room with low maintenance and high practicalities. It has that minimalist look which helps when you need to think about your next business proposal and not be distracted by superfluous objects that are really only dust magnets. - 33383
