What Can I Use In Traditional Kitchens?

By Matthew Kerridge

Like the old saying goes "what once was old is new again." This pertains to the traditional kitchens style all too well. More and more homes are being redecorated into this style and theme. These are kitchens that make you feel like you are truly at home and are always loved.

Instead of dining tables incorporate beautiful made farm tables constructed using aged wood to give it that really vintage feel. Use hutches as well, but new ones who have that old country feel to them or search out antique malls for true classic pieces. Display a set of vintage china and stoneware bowls on them for added ambiance.

For flooring ideas you can choose between real hardwood floors or go for tile that has a distressed and rustic feel to its style. Counter tops should be in granites or butchers block for the true touch of traditional flare.

What did your mothers kitchen look like? Incorporate things she would have used within her own kitchen when you were small. This is a great tip to remember when shopping for things to add into your own vintage kitchen. I know you can remember everything about that kitchen because that was the heart of every home back then. Things would be better if we could get back to those feelings and closeness to our own families these days.

Your cabinets should be in natural pine or cedar with just a clear varnish on them. No paint or stain should be applied as this detracts from their natural beauty. You can also shop around for baker's rack to match it in color and display some cast iron cookware, stoneware plates and vintage tea towels etc. On them for even more touches of the country feel. If you want cabinets with color then go for traditional white with glass front doors on some or a country blue.

For curtains they should be just valances in gingham, country colors or even have a country scene depicted on them. Tablecloths look best for special events only if they are hand sewn linen ones in natural colors. You do not want to hide the fabulous wood of your farm table all the time.

Finding decorations and items to add to your kitchen once it is finished is as easy as looking up on-line sites for vintage items and auctions. At these sites you can get true classic accessories at times lower than you could have imagined.

One great traditional accessory to look for is a wooden spice rack with glass bottles to hold the spices. These where in almost all older kitchens and will really pump up the traditional feel to yours.

Placing and island in the center of the kitchen is also an important part of traditional style. It should be made or purchased by the same company as the cabinets. You want it to blend with the counter tops and cabinets within the kitchen.

You can incorporate newer and more convenient items into your traditional kitchens and no one will even no they are there. Pot holders can be placed on insides of cabinet doors to hold smaller pots and pans as well as be designed to hold spices and cooking utensils instead. Good Luck and Good Cooking! - 33383
