A Tuscan Style Kitchen

By Boris Walkowski

One of the most well-liked themes for the kitchen is the Tuscan style. We often see this in Italian restaurants, often seen as homely eateries. The Tuscan design is fairly inexpensive and easy to do with the right color, lighting, accessories and materials.

For colors, earth tones rule! Tuscan design is one kind that can easily remind you of grandma's home-made bread or lazy summer afternoons. It is cozy and pleasant. The colors used are nature-colors that are seen in abundance in the landscapes of Tuscany. Think of colors that give you instant warmth and comfort, and you're on the right track.

Like the Majolica pottery it is important to use terracotta. This is an important substance in Italian life and is used not only for decor but also for cooking and storage. Other natural materials like marble, slate and granite will also lend to the Italian ambiance you desire through the texture they provide.

Accessories are quite simple for a Tuscan design - pottery, jars, wooden bowls, bottles and condiments for the Italian cuisine are staples of an Italian kitchen. Herbs are great additions too. When placed in a pretty container, it becomes a decor in itself and a great sensory stimulator. The kitchen will smell so good!

There aren't many accessories needed. The natural kinds are a plus actually, such as ingredients for Italian foods like peppers, garlic, herbs, etc. Pottery, wooden bowls and jars also make up a replica of an old-style kitchen in Italy. See how typical Italian kitchens have loads of ingredients stacked for all to see. Baskets of vegetables, jars full of condiments, over-sized containers; these things make the place look more homely.

The flooring is an important element in achieving the desired Tuscan style. Marble flooring is the top choice but if it's beyond your price range, an alternative is to use stone tiles.

An area rug with similar homely qualities will polish the new kitchen look. Apart from easy maintenance, an area rug adds comfort to the space. Cooking has never been more pleasant with a soft mat for the feet. It makes for a great centerpiece.

Italians are famous for their mouth-watering food and strong family ties. The kitchen followed after such a beautiful culture will also carry the semblance of love for family and food. An Italian-inspired kitchen has an old charm that will make family get-togethers and cooking a wonderful experience. - 33383
