Budget Kitchen Remodeling Ideas You Can Use

By Caroline Summers

Many women dream of updating their kitchens. However, the cost and the uncertainty of just what is important stop many projects before they begin. It is not necessary to make expensive, mass renovations to change the entire look of the room, however. Some of the best kitchen remodeling ideas involve making small alterations.

For example, if you cabinets are in good shape, you may not need to replace them. Dark finishes can be replaced with lighter ones, and solid cabinet fronts can be replaced with glass inserts. Another inexpensive cabinet update involves selecting a fabric or wallpaper pattern in an attractive tapestry or floral pattern and covering the doors with it. Add an oval or scalloped frame around the edges of the doors and you have instantly created a totally new and unique look.

If you are planning extensive renovations, consider elevating your dishwasher. Raising it just a few inches eliminates the bend and stooping required to load and unload dishes. This is especially beneficial for anyone with lower back problems, but can be appreciated by all.

If new counter tops are in your future, look for those that are molded in one piece. Traditional strips can be a disappointment in little time. The glue can fail, especially if they are in contact with water. And grout and caulking can discolor or flake. Ideally, a counter top that curves up in the back to create its own back-splash and has a rounded lip on the front to keep liquids on the counter, not the floor, is best. In addition, they make cleaning easier, and the continuous flow is more pleasing to the eye.

Back-splashes, or even walls, can be created by using tiles. Simply take a pattern you like, such as one with birds, animals, or flowers, on a white or ecru background. Add some plain tiles with a background the same color or a coordinated shade and arrange them as you find pleasing. Once installed, the entire room will seem both more colorful and brighter.

Especially in older homes, updated lighting is often needed. Recessed fluorescent fixtures create a soft light, and the tubes are longer lasting and more energy efficient than bulbs. You might also consider adding lighting to work areas, such as the sink or a center island.

Adding pull-outs to lower cabinets can not only save back strain, but also frustration. Things such as cookware are kept safe and organized, especially if you add a rack to hold lids neatly in place. A larger drawer the size of a file folder can be used to hold warranty information and to keep appliance guides easily accessible.

If possible, consider adding a tall cabinet with only an overhead shelf to keep the trash can and brooms and mops out of sight. Insert hooks or clips to hold dust pans and cleaning tools, and use the shelf for cleaning products. This will keep everything safe from infants and pets, as well.

When it comes to flooring, durability and ease of cleaning should be of prime consideration. However, you might want to look at other factors also. Tile is cold in the winter, as are many types of vinyl flooring. So-called "warm" linoleum is a better choice for barefoot cooks or those with infants who like to crawl on the floor. If carpet is chosen, look for patterns that will hide stains as well as add interest to the room.

All kitchen remodeling ideas can be adapted to your own personal preferences. A little imagination can go a long way toward creating the kitchen of your dreams. Make it uniquely yours, and do not feel you need to accept any plan except the one you want. - 33383

Ideas To Help With Your Small Kitchen Remodel

By Christine Anderson

When you plan on doing a small kitchen remodel you will want to take a few things into consideration. These things should include counter space, cabinet storage and how many power outlets your kitchen has, all of this will need to be planned out.

In addition to looking through magazines and different books looking for basic design tips, ideas with color and placement for your small kitchen remodel, it is important to just ask yourself, while standing in the kitchen, how much counter space you would like, if the lighting is good enough in your work area, and if you will need to get some more power outlets installed.

When you have a small kitchen having enough work space for preparing and serving meals is a priority. Having plenty of workspace makes it meal preparation a lot more pleasurable so really work out how you can have as large a work area as possible in your small kitchen. As nice as it is to have items on display in your kitchen, they take up valuable counter space so less is more room for you in this instance.

Another consideration when planning your small kitchen remodel is whether you need to contact an electrician and organise some additional power outlets to be put in the kitchen.Once you've decided on where your countertops are going to be located, work out which appliances you'll be using on these and whether the power outlets you have now are going to be sufficient or are in the right place.

Storage is another huge factor to think about when planning your small kitchen remodel. One can never have enough storage space in a kitchen so you want to make use of cabinets under your countertops in addition to having some wall cabinetry put in if you have none now.

Pick the best areas to have additional wall cabinets put in. Having an area to put things instead of it always placed on the counter tops. This will give you more of a spacious look in your kitchen and then give you more room to prepare and serve your meals.

It is nice when you have a kitchen you can work in with lots of lights and storage area; of course this takes much preparation, but it is all worth it in the end. - 33383

The Best Ideas For Kitchen

By Patricia Connor

These days it is interesting to note that kitchen are more commonly viewed as the centre of the home. This is because of the fact that some of life's best moments are created here. This is the room where you will find people coming together to prepare for great occasions like Christmas and birthdays. So with all of this focus, it is perhaps no wonder that there is now a lot more pressure on people to have the best room.

You don't have to spend a huge amount of money if you want to make the kitchen look a lot better. First you need to decide whether it is actually necessary to change the room very drastically with new fixtures and the like, or if it will suffice that you make a couple of well placed, less significant changes.

If it is going to be an idea to make a drastic change then you should think about how much this is going to cost you. Trying to do a lot of the work by yourself is going to be a good idea. But this does not mean that you should think that you could just do everything, remember that this is a specialised field.

You would look to find a contractor that can do a number of tasks for you such as the tiling, plumbing, any electrical work and also the installation of the cabinets.

These days there are many contractors that are able to do all of this and ultimately it should make the job cheaper.

It is recommended though that you try to do your best to work with them as much as possible. Think about it this way. Firstly you can keep an eye on what they are doing and make sure that everything is up to your standards. Secondly, you could even treat it as a learning experience and perhaps make this the last time that you need to get a contractor out to do various tasks and you could soon be the DIY king.

If your idea of the perfect kitchen does not mean that you have to change the whole room, then think about ways in which you could just add a little touch here and there. This means that you won't have to spend a lot of money and a couple of signature pieces could really make a massive difference. - 33383

Building Bedroom Cupboards

By Julian Venter

It's very easy to build a bedroom cupboard once you've got all the templates you need, tools you need and materials. There are some tricks you will need to learn to make this process easier though. I'm going to let you in on all the things that made building bedroom cupboards hard for me so you don't have to make the same mistakes and if you do you'll know how to solve them.

Let's assume that you already invested in materials and chipboard. You would also need hardware like PVC legs, hinges, oval tubes and chipboard screws. You can either buy diy bedroom cupboard or work out your own cut list to get yr wood cut and edged.

So having said all that let's start our project. First you will have to assemble all your cupboards. Remember to drill the holes for your chipboard screws 8mm away from the edge of the sides of your bedroom cupboards so that' they are in the middle. Why 8mm? Because the board is 16mm thick and 8mm would be the middle of the board that you are going to fix to that side.

Them you will have to assemble the bedroom cupboard by fixing the tops and bottoms to the sides. The 6x40 chipboard screw is one of the strongest screws to use. If you want the side to line up in front with the tops and bottoms effortlessly you can place them on a piece of chipboard. A great tool that also makes life very easy is the nail gun. You will still have to use a 6x40 screw to fix the cupboard pieces together as the nail isn't strong enough.

After you've assembled the bedroom cupboard and fixed the backing onto it you can make the shelf nail template. If you have 4 shelves you will have 5 spaces between them. Let's say your cupboard is 2200mm high. You internal height will be 2168mm because you have to subtract the bottom(16mm thick) and the top(16mm thick) from the height of the cupboard. Each shelf is also 16mm thick. If there is 4 shelves you will have to subtract 16mmx4=64mm off the internal dimensions of the cupboard. Now subtract 64mm from 2168mm and divide it by 5 and you'll get 420mm. That is the space between each shelf.

Use a piece of chipboard 2100mmx100mm and make yourself a shelf nail template. Make 4 marks on the chipboard in the middle of the plank that are 420mm away from each other. Take four 6x40mm screws and fix them on the marks you made so that they go through the wood by about 3mm. Position the template on the base of the bedroom cupboard against the side and knock it so that it makes marks on the sides for the self nails. Now you can hammer the shelf nails in on the marks and place the shelves on the nails.

Now all that's left to do is to hang the doors. To force the hinges to go straight when you fix them to the cupboard you will have to use a long straight plank and place it across the doors so that it pushes up against all the hinges. Once they are perfectly straight and lined up you can fix them to the doors.

See how simple it is to build a bedroom cupboard? Well all the best with building your bedroom cupboard and I hope you enjoyed this article. - 33383

Kitchen Knives " No Need To Overspend

By Jeremy Pabloccis

Have you ever been invited for dinner only to find that you can barely cut your meat with the knives given to you? How embarrassing! For everyone! Of course, a good set of kitchen knives would have prevented this problem. So, before you return the dinner invitation, make sure you have some great cutlery so your own guests can get through dinner without the embarrassment of eating their steak with their fingers!

When Martha Stewart decided to redo her Connecticut home, one of the most important design changes in her new kitchen was the addition of custom made drawers where she could keep her uber-expensive cutlery. Not content with just throwing them in a drawer, she had drawers designed that were padded, temperature controlled, and large enough so that each knife (and she has lots!) had room to lie flat without touching another one.

This might work for Martha, but for the rest of us we're lucky enough to have enough room for our china, never mind dedicated drawers for knives.

Martha probably spent on her knives what we spend on new living room furniture. And of course her knives will outlast our living room furniture. In an event, we don't really need that kind of quality; we just need something to get the job done, and done well. We just need to figure out what the "job" is before heading to the store and buying something only because it's on sale this week.

Knives range in price from under $100 to something close to a small used car. For the average cook, something around $150 is the perfect choice. Before rushing out for the next sale, however, do a quick assessment of the type of cooking you do and the knives you are most likely to use.

Most sets are fairly standard. A knife with a serrated edge, one for filleting fish, a paring knife, an all purpose chopping blade, and perhaps a butcher knife (meat cleaver). However, if you don't fillet fish and you don't dissect whole chickens, this may not be the best set for you, no matter how great a deal it looks like.

Keep in mind: price does not equal quality. To check for quality, make certain you can see what they call the "tang". This is the piece of metal that should run through the entire knife in one piece, starting at the tip of the blade. The blade is part of the tang, and it should continue into the handle. One piece of metal (forged is best) ensures added stability.

Learn how to find quality, too. Quality is all about the construction, and good construction means the knife has one single piece of forged metal running the entire length - this is the tang. The blade is actually the front portion of the tang, and the section inside the handle is the back portion. Without this one single piece construction, you have a good chance of breaking the knife in two with something as simple as chopping nuts or placing too much pressure in dissecting a chicken bone. - 33383

Dinner Set Review "At Your Service"

By Diana Richards

Dinner time in the United States used to mean one thing...sitting around a kitchen or dining room table with loved ones and enjoying a beautiful meal together. Surrounding the kitchen or dining room table, and eating off a nice dinner set, complete with a fork, knife, spoon, plate, glasses, napkins and a centerpiece was a great way to enjoy some fantastic conversation, and welcome in the evening hours.

In this article we will be exploring the world of one of these components, the humble dinner set. We will be explaining where these sets originated, and if time permits, we will be offering details on some of the finest examples available today.

Civilizations in the ancient world were often characterized by the pottery that remained years after they had ceased to exist. Archaeologists would find these remains as they combed through the various archeological sites. It's interesting to note that many people valued their dinnerware and pottery so much that they were even buried with it.

Sometimes people will refer to dinnerware as "China". Ever wonder why? It's because years ago dinnerware was made from porcelain, and porcelain making was invented by the Chinese over 1000 years ago. Logical answer, eh? Probably invented by the Tang Dynasty, but the emperors of the Song Dynasty seem to be taking most of the credit for it. Half way through the Song Dynasty, around 1100 AD, the process of porcelain making was being circulated throughout the East. By the time the 1400's AD had rolled around, this knowledge had made its way to Europe.

Because the cost of importing fine dinnerware from China was so expensive, only the very rich could afford it. To remedy this situation, the Europeans started to create their own "China" factories. They did modify the process a bit, incorporating a different mixture of clays and other materials. The result was a "softer China", one that had a duller or "softer tone" than those products that were being imported from China. Around 1700, in England, another form of "China" was starting to be developed. It was called "Bone China", and it was made from a mixture of both porcelain clays and bone ash.

Today, most of our valuable and yes collectable dinnerware is made from pottery, not porcelain. It's sometimes called "earthenware", and it was extremely popular during the decades of the 1950's and 1960's.

Stoneware is the most widely used pottery today. It seems to be all around us, from stores to restaurants, from homes to hotels. Stoneware is fired at a very high temperature until it is completely solid, and therefore able to hold liquids. The process for creating Stoneware, as was porcelain, was developed in China, about 3500 years ago. It's interesting to note that some of the most sought after pieces of Stoneware were created in the mid 1800's here in the United States (in the Virginia and New England areas to be more exact).

We hope you liked this little history of the dinner set. We will be offering our TOP PICKS in future articles. If you feel that you can't wait, please visit us on our blog. - 33383

Advice On Shopping For Furniture And Home Accents

By Jean Parker

Often, consumers spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars filling their homes with decorative and functional pieces. From furniture to accessories, finding the right combination of colors, textures and fabrics to create a warm and inviting environment, can get very costly. There are a few things shoppers should keep in mind when it comes to those big ticket items.

Practicability

Buyers should consider functionality when deciding on whether or not a piece of furniture or artwork is worth their hard earned money. Those on a budget should be paying close attention to making sure the essentials are paid for before moving on to luxury items like vases, wall art, or decorative pillows. Couches and chairs should take priority over rugs and lamps. While rugs and lamps certainly add character and depth to the decor, seating options not only take up the most space, but get the most use. These are not items consumers should skimp on. When it comes to fine furnishings, shoppers will get what they pay for where comfort and durability are concerned. If pets or children are a consideration when picking out fabrics, a little extra money spent will go a long way in the life of a piece of furniture. This also goes for bedroom furniture. The mattress and box spring are items that get nightly use, so spending a good chunk of money will go a long way.

Style

Although you think that the bold colored sofa with it's vibrant pattern is the perfect choice for your living room, you should think more long term, than immediate future. This piece of furniture may be great for you current decor, but what happens in a few years when you decide to paint your living room or move into a new home. You can spend money on expensive slip covers or to pay and have your furniture reupholstered, but the best thing to do is purchase a neutral color in the first place.

Extras

It is easy to fall in love with accessories when you are shopping for your redecorating needs. Before making these purchases, as they can become very costly, you should think carefully about how it will fit into your decor years down the road. This is nothing something that needs to be done with all accessories, such as throw pillows, however for items like expensive artwork you will want to make sure you will have a place for it throughout the years, and maybe even pass it down in your family.

By taking things into consideration, before yo make your purchase, you will be sure to end up with a wonderful room and no regrets. - 33383

Kitchens: Where To Spend Your Money

By Amy Stevens

Kitchens and bathrooms sell homes. Period. Sure, you spent a fortune on your new pool, your pre-wired surround sound family room, and your new patio with outdoor cooking area, but when push comes to shove, it's the kitchen and bathrooms we fall in love with.

Don't be confused with "retro" and "old". When your kitchen really is "old", it's a turn off. Buyers want new, clean, updated, and shiny. Unless someone is specifically looking for a house they can remodel completely, and they do exist, upgrade your kitchen the best way you can afford.

A complete kitchen rehab can run $35,000 or more, depending on the size. Three walls of cabinets, new appliances, a built in range, island with sink, decorator recessed lighting - these add up. Sure, your home will sell, but if you can't afford the upgrades, what options do you have?

Replacing cabinets can eat up any budget, and in many cases, cabinet really don't need to be completely replaced. They need to be spruced up - cleaned, polished, refinished, painted, new hardware - these are all cheaper ways to get the same, if not better, result.

This is not the time to go funky and figure out what people may or may not like. This is when you paint everything pale beige or white, make sure you have the best flooring you can afford even if it's fake hardwood (there's actually nothing wrong with that, and in many instances it can be a better choice).

Don't even try one of the newer bold colors like orange or red for the background walls. Learn to decorate for others, not you. Stick with pale neutrals. If you insist on having colors, add window treatments or area rugs which can be removed.

Lighting is important as well. Having one $20 apartment grade overhead fixture after spending thousands on other improvements can kill the entire look. On the other hand, don't buy designer lighting fixtures and slap on a coat of paint and think all is well.

A double pain sliding glass patio door can really kill a look if it's cracked, scratched or fogging up inside. A new door is fairly inexpensive, in the scheme of things. A new sink and faucet can become your focal points, even if you do little else but paint the walls. Shiny new stainless steel can make any kitchen look new again. - 33383

Microwave Oven Accessories Improve Cooking

By Miles Stoppard

Microwave oven accessories have been in existence as long as the microwave. In the 1940s, the first oven was produced by American engineer Percy Spencer while working for the Raytheon Company. The year 1945 was the first patent for this appliance, and the first food cooked was popcorn. This method of cooking is well known in the United States, Britain, and Ireland. It is not as widely used in Europe but is found in Italy and Poland. Early models warmed leftovers, boiled water, defrosted meat or past meals, and popped popcorn. Modern advances have allowed more types of groceries to be baked in these mini-ovens.

Splatters and spills are eliminated by plate or splatter covers. The inside of the unit stays clean, and heat and moisture is contained closer to the plate for enhanced cooking. Turntables operated on tiny wheels distribute heat evenly. If the turntable breaks or the unit does not have one, go-arounds can be used instead. These are battery operated and rotate when food is placed on the surface.

Beverages and Side Dishes Are Quickly Created- Boiling water has now evolved to using a microwave kettle. This little look-alike glass measuring cup even whistles when water is ready. Sun tea can now be brewed quickly and deliciously. This container can also be used in the traditional outdoor method.

Old Favorites Enjoy New Cooking Ware- A microwave kettle works just like a real tea kettle. Resembling a glass measuring cup, it even whistles when the water has boiled. The sun tea maker is a glass carafe that can also be placed in the sun to make real sun tea.

Rice steamers or cookers cook rice quickly and in a manner of minutes without being sticky. Modern silicone cake pans bake cakes in the oven and microwave. This material is nonstick, bendable, and fast cooling. Sandwich makers are easy and simple enough for children to make grilled cheese sandwiches at any time.

Quick and Easy Breakfasts- Cooking a breakfast of eggs and meat is fast and simple with all the breakfast helpers available. Egg cookers boil multiple eggs and make great omelets. Both eggs and meat can be cooked in the two-compartment breakfast maker that comes with a lid.

The other side is used to bake and defrost. Other bacon makers hang the bacon or slot the bacon for even cooking. Browning meat is even faster using a tender cooker. This item will even roast meat quickly and effectively.

An important tip to remember is not to use foil or anything metal in these units as this is a fire hazard. Plastic wrap can be used but don't allow it to touch the food. Be sure to check the bottom of all plastic and glass containers before using; not all plastic and glass are safe to use. Microwave oven accessories have come a long way from just the splatter shield and popcorn maker. Now whole meals can be cooked in just minutes instead of hours. - 33383

How To Use Dairy Produce: Part 3 - Eggs

By Owen Jones

The Basic Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

EGGS: Part 1

Eggs can be fresh or dried, dried eggs being only chickens' eggs without the shell and water. Dried egg should be stored in a cool, dry place - not in the refrigerator! Store eggs for several or a week in a cool place not close to strong-smelling foods. An egg stand is ideal for this purpose. If the eggs are soiled, wipe them over - washing will remove the natural oils which help to preserve the eggs.

Pickled Eggs: eggs laid in the Spring keep longer than those laid in the other seasons. Eggs that can not be cleaned-up, must be refused. Waterglass or the other special preparations should be used. If an egg floats to the surface, use it at once. Try to maintain the room temperature around 2-8 C and they should remain edible for 6 to 9 months.

Preparing Eggs for Cooking: break each egg separately into a cup, before adding it to the other ingredients to ensure it is not 'off'. If you wish to separate the white from the yolk, tip the contents back and forth between the two eggshell halves and the white (albumen) will run off. Beat eggs with a whisk or a fork in an appropriate bowl; whip egg whites with a knife on a dinner plate - a pinch of salt will help.

Raw eggs used to be prescribed for invalids as they are easily digestible, but, this not advisable these days due to the prevalence of salmonella. One method, presented here for the curious was to strain a beaten egg into a mug and slowly add a cup of hot milk (or tea, coffee or lemon water; add sugar to taste. Sherry was often added also.

Cooking Eggs: eggs must be cooked slowly because the albumen cooks at a temperature lower than that of boiling water and becomes 'tough' at higher temperatures. By the same token, if you use raw egg to thicken a sauce and the liquid is subsequently allowed to boil, the sauce will 'curdle', i.e. the egg will solidify into small specks, spoiling its texture.

Coddling: produces easily digestible egg-whites, making it an ideal method for invalids and children. Lower eggs into 75mm boiling water; place lid and remove from heat. Stand for: 7 mins for medium-, 5 mins for soft- and 20 mins for hard-boiled eggs .

Boiling: lower fresh eggs gently into 3" (75mm) boiling water with a large spoon. Replace the lid and boil gently for 3-4" mins for soft-, 4-5 mins for medium- and 10 mins for hard-boiled eggs.

Place in egg eggcups and tap the shell to crack it. Allow the steam to escape, which will prevent the egg further cooking. For sandwiches, salads etc,. boil the egg for 12 mins and plunge into cold water. This enables the shell to be easily removed and prevents a black ring around the yolk. - 33383

A Few Tips To Help You Determine Which The Best Slow Cookers Are

By Chris Frost

Many people already are aware about the benefits of using slow cookers and most of us must have used those that run on electricity but we still may not be sure about which the best slow cookers are.

When it comes to picking the best slow cookers you will need to look at factors such as being able to properly tenderize meats. In addition, you need to understand the way that these cookers function which typically is to provide low amount of heat and prolonging the cooking time while also releasing heat that helps you to stay warm in your kitchen while the cooker is working.

Slow cookers are wonderful and ideally suited for use by college students, busy parents as well as bachelors. They certainly also help you a lot as they provide you with an alternative to having to buy junk food or make-do with having to stick with eating TV dinners.

There are of course a few important considerations that you must address before you can hope to identify the best among different kinds of slow cookers. Factors such as price are very important and so too is the size of a cooker as well as its brand name.

When it comes to picking the slow cooker that is the best you must factor in the capacity of the cooker. Typically, you ought to look at those slow cookers that have between one and two quarts capacity which will be suitable for cooking meals for one or two people. It follows therefore that a six quart slow cooker will be ideal for three to six persons.

Another aspect to picking the best slow cookers is looking at how easy is the cooker in terms of cleaning it up and also using it as a bowl for serving meals. Also, don't forget to look at features such as programming the slow cooker and also how well you can control their temperature. Digital controls are useful and worth checking out as well.

Electronically operated slow cookers are often considered the best option though many would argue that those that work mechanically are better because the latter type offer more simplicity in using the cooker and are more reliable as well. - 33383

Leather Bar Stools Make A Classy Kitchen

By Matt Allan

In days gone by leather furniture and leather bar stools were in the sole domain of the rich and powerful. They often graced the offices of lawyers or were perhaps hidden away in private men's clubs. The types of clubs filled with the hushed tones of powerful business men and politicians. Even though those days are gone, nothing quite adds a touch of elegance like leather bar stools, and now these bar stools are affordable to all.

These days leather bar stools are becoming more and more commonly available. They can be found in middle class homes and an assortment of business ventures. Although slightly more expensive than other bar stools, in many ways leather furniture can make a lot of sense. Accidental spills can very often be taken care of with a quick wipe with a damp cloth. Leather is also very durable which can add years to the lifespan of your bar stool. Not to mention that leather bar stools are darn comfortable. Bar stools made with Grade A or first quality leather can look good for years.

The stools available on the current market are either the standard 30" or the shorter 24" styles. The height of the stool chosen is determined by the height of the bar or perhaps table that is to be serviced by the stools. The best choice for children would be the shorter 24" stool.

Leather bar stools come in every color of the rainbow. I have personally seen natural leather, dark tan, black, silver, green, white, brown and blue stools. Made to order bar stools can be developed in any color imaginable. The legs of these bar stool are generally stained a complimentary color. However they can also be painted. Stools with metal legs are also available but less common.

These stools also come in leather sling versions which a a more western feel. You can find stools with backs, stools with backs and arms and stools without backs. The stool you chose is all a matter of personal choice. Cushioned stools are generally more comfortable than those without a cushioned seat but you might find that they don't wear as well as the foam loses it's spring.

Did we mention that leather bar stools are easy to clean? With a moderate bit of care, these stools can serve your family for decades. If you see some wearing on the arms of the stool you might want to rub in some protective oil. Make sure you wipe off excess oil before anyone sits on the stool. To further protect your leather furniture you can spray on a leather protector when you first purchase the chairs and every six months thereafter. Leather furniture seems to look richer as it ages. Good quality leather bar stools are well worth the cost. - 33383

Then you'd be in the place that everyone wants to be: doing a job that they really love doing. So, what are interior design colleges and what can you expect them to do for you?

Well, to begin with, the number of interior design colleges that you will come across in your search will be large and, at times, even confusing. If you do a search on the Internet or even just call up the colleges and ask for a catalogue of courses, you can then make an well-informed decision about which of the interior design colleges you would like to study at.

If your life is too busy these days, but you still want to try a course or two, you have the option of going for any of the Internet interior design colleges that are so numerous these days. Or maybe you could even try a night course or correspondence course in your pursuit of knowledge about interior design.

All of these interior design colleges teach basically the same things and will enhance your own natural abilities. You'll learn everything from the basics up and will be given an insight into why certain colours match well next to each other and why other colours don't.

You'll learn when to use the rules that you're taught and when you can break them. But above all, you'll learn how to use your natural design abilities with the knowledge that you've garnered at the college and blend it into a mix that is greatly pleasing to the eye.

Moreover, if interior design colleges are what you want, then you can be assured of coming away with a lot more than only the knowledge of how to place which colour next to which colour to get a stunning effect. By studying at least one or two courses, or even by doing the whole range of courses offered to you, you'll be expanding your natural interior design abilities at least a hundred fold.

There's nothing quite like having a confidence boost to shore up your own innate skills and to be able to tell someone with absolute confidence that you are a bona fide interior designer. - 33383

10 Things You Need To Know Before Designing A New Kitchen

By Martin Elmer

When designing a kitchen it is important to know some facts about the recommended measurement to ensure that you can work as easy as possible. This article gives you 10 important guidelines for your kitchen design project.

1. The work triangle, which is the space between the refrigerator, sink, and stove should be 26' or less with none of the sides longer than 9', or less than 4'.

2. If your kitchen is larger than 150 sq. ft choose at least 16 1/2' of countertop, 15 1/2' of wall cabinets, and 16' of base cabinets. For smaller kitchens buy 11' of countertop, 12' of wall cabinets, and 13' of base cabinets.

3. Plan you work aisles no less than 42" wide if you are one cook and 48" if you are more than one in the kitchen.

4. Specify a minimum of 24" of counter space on one side of the sink and at least 18" on the other.

5. Have at least 15" of counter space on besides the refrigerator (on the handle side) for unloading groceries. If you have a side-by-side refrigerator have the space on both sides. If it is not possible, have a landing space across from the refrigerator (with a 48" maximum distance).

6. For easy cleaning the dishwasher should be placed no more than 36" away for the edge of the sink. Make at least 21" of standing room next to the machine.

7. For microwaves and ovens, provide at least 15" of counter space nearby, at least 16" deep.

8. For optimum clearance, no entry, appliance, or cabinet doors should interfere with another.

9. The prevent repetitive-motion injury make the work counters have different height. For chopping and seated-use access have them between 28 and 36" off the floor, and for more general tasks make then between 36 and 46". This is standard measures. Taller cooks may need higher counters.

10. If you are installing a cabinet unit above the cook top, the clearance should be at least 24" if the surface is fireproof. If it isn't the clearance should be 30".

Kitchen design is equally divided between science and art. You can have a lot of good ideas, but if you do not know the recommended measurements, the result will never be satisfying. It is expensive to build a new kitchen, so you should make sure that you get the best result. - 33383

Acquiring The Perfect Kitchen Knives

By Jeremy Pabloccis

When a person loves to cook, they will eventually start looking for perfect kitchen knives. Buying inexpensive kitchen knives is often the logical choice when a person does not enjoy cooking or having knives that last. But, for cooking and having knives on hand that are reliable and durable, finding kitchen knives that will stay in pristine condition over a long term is important.

Knives are made from many types of materials, but they are put manufactured in one of two ways. They are either forged or they are stamped. The prices of the knives vary greatly, but forged knives are usually more expensive than stamped knives. When you are beginning to seriously cook and want to get knives that will last for several years, forged knives will provide you with some wonderful options.

Forged blade knives are set apart from stamped blade knives in many ways. They are thicker than stamped knives and are carefully balances between the blade and handle of the knife. They are hand forged and hammered so each knife is unique.

The bolster is that little silver part where the blade meets the handle. This piece adds strength to the knife and balances the blade. Most chef and specialty knives where quality and durability is required are made from forged blade knives. The knives are available in many sizes and are usually selected for the fit and comfort they offer to the person using them. These knives make fine, controlled chopping extremely easy.

When you see thinner knives they are stamped blade knives. These knives are normally unbalanced and the bolster on the knife does not serve the purpose of adding strength or balance to the knife. The handle of the knife will feel heavier than the blade of the knife.

The stamped knives are easy to spot because the blades are very thin. These knives are easy to sharpen because they have been stamped or cut from a single sheet of metal. After being stamped, the blades are ground, tempered, polished, then sharpened before being attached to the knife handle.

Finding a long lasting knife that feels comfortable when you hold it and continues to perform with quality indefinitely will depend on the metal and type of knife that you select. Choosing a high grade stainless steel or ceramic knife will give you the kind of durability you are seeking.

Low carbon stainless steel knives are the most common metal found in inexpensive knives. These knives do not have a long life and often will get dull, stain, and bend or break when they are used after a short period of time. Selecting perfect kitchen knives begins with learning about the types of knives that are available. There are knives made for almost every kitchen activity. When knives are purchased that have been manufactured with the excellence of design that will give them durability and quality, you will have them for several years. - 33383

Renovating Your Kitchen

By Chuck Shoemaker

Redoing a kitchen to upgrade it or just to change the decor is a move that can add more space, and make the room more appealing. But before you begin the renovation you should have a clear cut picture in mind of how you want the kitchen to look.

There are software's you can purchase that will help you to remodel any room, and it will work nicely when you figure out how the kitchen design you want will look. This is an easier way than starting to move the kitchen all around and hope that it looks good. Try several ideas out and see how they look on the computer, before you begin ripping apart the kitchen.

Use the software to see how different placements of furniture and appliances will look in the new remodeled kitchen. Add in an island to the middle of the kitchen, this will give you more preparation space and look really nice too.

Don't forget if you don't have a pantry you can always try adding one, or simply redo those cabinets. You don't need a professional to do this step either. Take off the paint or stain that is on your cabinets and change the color or the stain. Adding in new handles to the cabinets is another great way that you can completely change the look.

If you want to change the floor around this would be the best time. Most people stick to either tile or wood floors for a kitchen. But adding in a nice area rug with some beautiful color in it will add in great warmth to the room. If you want to add some comfort to the room, put a bamboo rug in front of the sink, it will help when you've been standing for a while.

Adding in a breakfast bar is a great idea if you don't have one already. It's great for those days when you don't feel like sitting at the table to eat. It will add extra preparation room too.

Don't forget that you may not be able to do all the tasks yourself. If you're unsure of how to complete the job correctly hire a professional. Don't be stubborn and feel you need to do the whole kitchen by yourself; this can lead to some costly mistakes that will add up after a bit. So be wise and complete the work you can, and hire an expert for those things you cannot do. - 33383

Obtaining The Right Espresso Maker For Your Needs And Budget

By John Ulonka

As a coffee lover you will need to expand out past the "perfect cup of coffee" and explore the world of espresso. Espressos are appreciated a hefty percentage of coffee drinkers so to be a well rounded coffee drinker and to experience some of the best coffee drinks you will need to include espresso into your habit. While you can go out to the coffee shop to get your espresso it is best that you own your own espresso maker. Not only can you play around with the process and materials to make your own best cup of espresso, but you will also save a lot compared with purchasing espresso at the coffee shops.

First of all, let us give a background on what type of coffee espressos are. To make an espresso, you use the same kind of coffee beans as any other coffee. The great difference lies in the coffee grind and in the brewing process. Generally, the bean grind on espressos are finer. The brewing is done not just by any means but with a strict standard in the forcing of hot water though the coffee grounds at extremely high pressure. Now, you might think that it is not so important to know the process and the requirements of making a good espresso cup as you can always buy one at the nearest coffee shop. Well, while this is true, there is a great difference between spending a lot for commercial coffee every single day and having your own espresso maker at home.

When it comes to the kinds of espresso maker, you can either have the pump driven, the piston driven or the steam type. The piston driven espresso maker requires an operator to pump a lever to pressurize hot water and let it pass through the fine coffee bean grind. The term pulling a shot is actually coined through this process as an operator would need to pull the lever in order to create a shot of espresso. This original espresso maker has made way for the newer kind, called a pump driven espresso maker. Instead of using manual pull force, a motor-driven pump pushes the pressurized water into the coffee bean grounds. This is the type used in most commercial coffee shops nowadays. The third kind is the steam-driven which is a machine that simply uses steam to force hot water to create strong shots of coffee.

Now that you know the force behind an espresso maker, then it can be easier for you to search for the right one for your own needs. Needless to say, it is your type of machine that can lead you to one within the right budget. The steam-driven espresso maker is generally the cheapest one. But this does not mean that an espresso cup made from a steam espresso maker would always make a cup of coffee that is below normal standards. You can get a high end coffee maker even with the steam driven ones and get yourself a satisfying brew anytime you want it. However, if you have more budget set aside then getting a piston or a pump espresso maker would give you stronger cups.

Make sure you make room on your kitchen counter. As a coffee drinker you will definitely will be filling the extra room on your counter with an espresso maker. Enjoy! - 33383

Many Different Residential Bar Stools Options

By Matt Adams

Acquiring bar stools to put in your home has become more and more popular over the last quarter decade. Before that, it seemed that the barstool was relegated strictly to commercial spaces. Either you would find a comfortable barstool at your local pub, or sit down on a chrome upholstered variety at the soda shoppe / diner. Due to the demands of their commercial use, these brand of bar stools were necessarily sturdier than typical residential use furniture, and as such, stood up to some heavy duty use.

However, now residential bar stools can be readily found and are a great addition to many rooms or outside spaces. Given their height, bar stools add some increased vertical visual dimension to a room. If properly placed they can create a point of visual interest. Although, physically bar stools require more space than regular furniture, their height lends itself to the creation of vertical space.

Bar stools come in two general heights. The original height is 30 inches. These stools fit the standard bar height. A newer and increasingly popular height is the 24 inch bat stool. This shorter stool is well suited for children. The 24 inch bar stool is commonly found at kitchen breakfast bars. This shorter stool is also good for those people with mobility impairments.

Since you can find a set of bar stools in just about any style that you can imagine, you should think about the options that you will want in your stools before you decide on your final choice. Aside from height, the different attributes which distinguish bar stools are the material they are made from, whether they are swivel or not, and if they are backless or have a back and/or arms. The deluxe model is of course the swivel barstool with a back and arms. One of the biggest benefits of a swivel stool that I must mention is the fact that you will tend to swivel out of your stool, rather than push back from the bar, thereby preventing scratches on your floor.

Some bars stools have full backs while other bar stools have half backs or no backs at all. There are two things to consider when deciding to buy a backless bar stool. The first issue is comfort. Backless bar stools are less comfortable. This might not be important if you only intend to use the bar stool for short periods of time. The second thing to consider is available space. Backless bar stools are ideally suited for smaller spaces.

When deciding to update your furniture or re-model part of your house, you should consider adding some bar stools to the design scheme. Bar stools come in a wide range of styles, colors, and materials. They can be hard seated, upholstered, or leather. Backless bar stools are simply one example of many different options available on the residential furniture market. - 33383

Chop Up the Food with a Better Knife Set

By Moses Harun

Whenever you pay for a Sabatier knife set, be sure that the product you are getting originated in the Thiers region of France. Despite the fact that the Sabatier knife is high on the list of quality kitchen knives with commercial and hobby chefs alike, it is duplicated by quite a few knife manufacturers, some of which might be doubtful at best regarding authenticity, workmanship and originality.

To straighten out your mystification on the subject of which Sabatier knives are bona fide (marketed by knife makers from the Thiers region and having a history extending back as far as the 19th century) and which could be cheap copycats (mass-produced in China and other countries), be sure to inspect the knives for these company names: ETS Sabatier An & Perrier, Thiers Issard Sabatier and the Sabatier Diamant, as some examples. To simplify matters, you can always check for the "Made in France" marking.

Product Features

With many kinds of Sabatier kitchen knives inundating the market, you should insist on the authentic kinds if you want to receive good value for your hard-earned money. Let's discuss for example the knives of ETS Sabatier An & Perrier that makes the brand name Sabatier-K.

The producer makes six series that are as expected in French - Authentique, Au Carbone Vintage, Bellevue, Proxus, Auvergne and Elegance. Most of the blades are fully forged, a designation which tells us that the blade, bolster and tang are forged out of a single sheet of steel. Full forging provides a more robust and smoother knife with just the right weight and balance for easy cutting.

Advantages

Unless you are going for the cheaper imitations, you can buy Sabatier knife sets fabricated by hand using fully-forged high-carbon steel. The handles will be available in steel or wood, and the set will come with a slotted wood display stand. Naturally, the imitations will also offer the great looking handles and wooden block, however you will certainly end up working with weaker and duller blades.

Additionally, the Sabatier-K brand knives can be personalized. Having your cutlery personalized is not a possibility that you may receive from any knife manufacturer, and so enables you to offer a great personalized gift for your favorite newlyweds. This company's blades are of such good craftsmanship that you may even give them to a Cordon Bleu graduate or beginning restaurant owner who can fully appreciate and display them.

Disadvantages

Well, there is really one obvious drawback with Sabatier knives. Because of numerous merchants slapping the name on practically every Sabatier knife made, your purchase should never be done lightly. Novice cooks who merely want to purchase knives for normal use must do some homework ahead of time to be sure their knives have the quality and ease of use they are hoping to invest in.

When you come to think of it, though, a knife is simply as good as the chef who uses it. So, as a result, an authentic Sabatier knife could come with all the advantages of the highest quality knives in the world, but when wielded by a careless amateur, it could just as well be fashioned from wood.

So, the best option while shopping for a Sabatier knife set is to make sure that the knives you are buying are genuine, price notwithstanding. And make sure you know how to use them! - 33383

24" Bar Stools

By Matt Adams

Bar stools are one of those design elements that a lot of people take for granted. Many people have never given much thought to the fact that these pieces of furniture were never found in the home, and were only ever used in commercial settings, whether that was the pub or bar down the street, the coctail bar where you went to enjoy live jazz, or at the breakfast counter at the local diner.

For literally centuries, bar stools were 30 inches in height. Of course, the height was specifically engineered so that a person could comfortably belly up to the bar and consume much ale. The bar stools were generally constructed from oak or another hardwood. The stools were firmly balanced upon 4 legs that were each attached to the underside of the stool seat a few inches towards the centre from each corner. As you can imagine, having a sturdy base of support was an important element in early bar stools.

Different decades introduced different styles in all manners of home, commercial and personal style. It was during this decade of revolutionary home design that barstools were introduced to more than just commercial settings. What was once relegated to the corner pub, or the soda shoppe diner, was now introduce to newly renovated diner style kitchens, and wood paneled basement rec rooms. Oak and chrome were the most popular styles of this time, depending on your style of choice.

Even with this home decor revolution and the introduction of barstools to the home, you would still typically find the more common 30" bar stool. The higher bar stools outnumbered short diner counter height stools just by the sheer number of establishments with the taller barstools. As barstools were introduced to the residential settings, the shorter 24" version became an increasingly popular stool height option, especially with the design changes that came in the 1980s. 24" bar stools were now all the rage.

Even though short bar stools may not fit your image of the classical bartop height bar stool, they are extremely popular and handy choices. They are ideal if you have children that are often using the breakfast bar top for breakfast or snacks. It is also a great way to seat children if they are doing homework or weekend craft projects. Shorter stools are also beneficial for anyone that would have trouble navigating a taller barstool, but would like the convenience that a barstool offers.

The old oak bar stools found in pubs now almost seem antiquated. These days 24 inch bar stool are as common as 30 inch bar stool. Most major department stores will stock a variety of both types. Specialty furniture stores will either stock or be able to order many different types and models. Bar stool are wooden, metal, resin and/or upholstered. There are 30 " or 24 " bar stools to suit every taste. - 33383

Small Refrigerator Factors to Consider

By Leon Nye

A small refrigerator is useful in many scenarios but anyone in the market for a new unit should really take more consideration to their needs so that they aren't disappointed with the purchase. The most important thing, quite obviously, is the size of small refrigerator. Not only does it have to be big enough to hold what it required but also small enough so that there isn't excessive energy wasted.

The first thing that really affects the effectiveness of the storage capacity of a refrigerator is are the shelves. Since space is limited improper shelf design can create a lot of wasted space or can assist in making the most of empty space. Adjustability of the shelves is an important factor to increasing the efficiency of the space used.

Adjustable shelves offer more than just flexibility to optimize the storage capacity of the refrigerator. Removable or sliding shelves make it easier to reorganize and reach for contents stored inside, as well as make cleaning that much easier. Glass shelves are best for cleaning because they are see-through so any spots can be easily identified.

Organization beyond the shelves includes special compartments most commonly built into the inside of the door. Common things like condiment shelves and beverage can holders are designed with standard container sizes in mind. While this can save a lot of space and make reaching for small condiment bottles convenient, it can also be a waste of space if the shelves and compartments do not match the contents to be stored in them.

Another important factor of all appliances is energy consumption. Small refrigerators typically come with the standard thermostat controller which is just a knob with a series of numbers. Digital thermostats are better because they allow a target temperature to be set and that is a significant energy saving because of the better accuracy than the numbers on a knob.

Small refrigerators are popular for a number of reasons but for people who rely on this appliance for their sole refrigeration needs the reasons are usually space and cost considerations. Also known as a mini refrigerator or compact refrigerator, small refrigerators offer many conveniences. - 33383

Tips for Remodeling and Modernizing Your Kitchen

By Sue Tandor

If you have an older kitchen and are thinking of remodeling, you need to figure out where best to spend your money. In extreme cases, people have even been known to knock down a wall or two in order to expand the kitchen and make it more modern. In most cases though, you only need to change a few things to give your kitchen the update it needs. Here are some ideas:

1) New homes today are built with granite, meaning it is the current trend for counter tops and windowsills. Granite is available in a variety of colors and has a beautiful shine, so it is easy to see why it is such a popular choice. Granite is also one of the best on the market in terms of cleanliness. The reason for this is because granite is sanded and buffed until it is impeccably smooth, so there are no crevices for bacteria to grow like they can with other surfaces.

2) Your kitchen sink can be as fancy as you want it to be. Since the kitchen sink gets the most use of any sink in the house, you want to be sure yours will wear well and not chip. Another classic look for kitchen sinks is stainless steel, and you'll see these stainless sinks in many new homes, too. The most important thing is that the sink style you choose blends in well with your kitchen design.

3) Islands are one of the more common installations during an upgrade. If you are lucky enough to have a kitchen large enough for an island, be sure to consider a variety of designs so that you choose an island that suits your style and function. Some homeowners prefer to install the sink or range in the island itself. Of course, you have the option to install a plain island to provide extra counter space. The most important thing to consider before getting an island is whether your kitchen is large enough to house it.

4) Flat screen televisions are everywhere now that the prices on them have gone down substantially. One of the places people are interested in having one of those flat screens is in the kitchen. When you look for kitchen TVs, you have the option of getting one that was specifically made for the kitchen or one that wasn't. Usually the ones that are made for the kitchen attach under the cabinets and are of the small variety. These kitchen TV's flip up and down so you can hide it when it is not in use. If you want a regular bigger TV, you will most likely have to mount it on the wall somewhere in the kitchen. - 33383

Small Dorm Refrigerators for College

By Leon Nye

Small refrigerators offer a lot of benefits to people in all sorts of living situations. Those who don't rely on a mini refrigerator as their only refrigerator enjoy the convenience of having extra storage space for specific consumables such as beverages.

However, a small refrigerator is almost essential in a college lifestyle where the next meal is not guaranteed and the exact location of residence is constantly changing. A small refrigerator offers the mobility to move around as well as the ability to store just enough food to get by.

Those who have stable housing conditions and own a full sized refrigerator don't necessarily need to have a small refrigerator. But many enjoy the convenience it offers because now drinks and snacks can be within reach of the game room or other area of the house that may not be conveniently accessible to the kitchen. While many homes have a second refrigerator in the garage, a small refrigerator is great in the bedroom for midnight drinks or in the living room while entertaining guest.

In college the small refrigerator is not a luxury but almost a necessity. It is the perfect size for keeping leftover food and the full width freezer compartment of most mid-sized units can fit at least a couple frozen dinners. Most college students do not have the need to store a lot of grocery but it is nice to be able to keep enough food for the next couple meals. Most students are too occupied with studying and partying to worry about making their own meals anyways. This is just something to keep snacks and drinks cold.

Another aspect of college life is the constant changing of living quarters. It is not uncommon for a student to move every year or more whether it is from dorm room to dorm room or apartment to apartment. The small size of the refrigerator makes it a viable appliance to have since it can easily be moved in a regular sedan sized car. Just remember that if the refrigerator is transported on its side to allow it to sit up right for at least a couple hours before plugging it in. An 8 cubic feet refrigerator is probably the largest piece of furniture a typical college student would own.

A mini refrigerator is a popular appliance in many college dorms and for good reason. It is one of the tools that will assist a young adult in learning to become self sufficient and learning to feed themselves. A small refrigerator is also something that can travel with them through many years as they graduate from the college life and into a place of their own. - 33383

Give Your Kitchen a Facelift

By Gary White

As you know the kitchen is where most of the time is spent especially for holidays and when you are entertaining guests. If you're looking around and notice that there are a few updates you would like to get done, why not start it today? Kitchens are usually the last room in the home to be made over since it may cost more than your traditional upgrades to other areas in the home. You have appliances and other little items which cost more than just updating paint and decor.

Making over a kitchen doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive job. Just by choosing wisely and updating little things you'll get more of an advantage out of it. If your appliances are fairly new, there is no need to purchase new ones at this time. In most cases you can create a brand new looking kitchen under $100.00.

As you know grease splatters and that will make a kitchen look older than it is. You also have to consider the wear and tear on the floor from people entering and walking on it daily. Dirt is the number one aging appearance you'll notice when entering into a kitchen. By spicing it up a bit the dull look in your kitchen will bring new life into the home.

By choosing a great linoleum floor which is in a roll or just the tiles you'll be able to make it look as if it took hundreds of dollars for that look. It is quite simple to apply and won't take much time. You will have many different colors and patterns to choose from so there will always be one which will fit the scheme you want to create in the kitchen area.

Area rugs are a great way to bring softness into the kitchen area. As you know most kitchens aren't carpeted due to spills so area rugs are an easy way to give it that cozy feeling. You also can wash them and replace them when you are getting bored with the ones that are in the space. Try placing an area rug in front of the sink and also in front of the stove. This will give you more cushion while cooking and doing dishes so you won't have as much strain on the back or feet from the hard surface that lies beneath. Area rugs are another great way to preserve the flooring underneath from scratches, stains, and of course wear and tear that comes along with the territory.

Once you create the color scheme in the kitchen you just made over, you'll feel as if it's a brand new room in the home. It will be refreshed and give it another life. Just the little changes in a room will make the biggest difference. - 33383

Family Meals In A Crock Pot - Why You Will Save Both Time And Money

By Susanne Myers

Cooking with a crock pot, or slow cooker, is said to save time and money. Is there really any truth to this assumption?

Save Time With a Crock Pot - This may seem like an oxymoron to some people. After all, how can having a meal in the crock pot for eight hours save time? It all depends on your lifestyle and your routine for dinnertime, but most have to agree that getting dinner in the crock pot, then walking away from any further time spent in the kitchen, definitely frees up time.

Gone are the days of someone being home all day to prepare the family meals. In this day and age of the busy, scattered family, we need to rely on more than one person to get dinner on the table. Because using a crock pot doesn't expose youngsters to hot burners and open flames, getting the little ones in the family, and the less experienced cooks, involved becomes much easier. Simply having someone there to help throw ingredients into the crock pot can be a big help. Now, it's a joint venture and meal preparation is shared, freeing up some much needed time for you to focus on other chores.

Even standing over a stove and stirring a pot, watching it boil so to speak, is time that you could have for something else. Once the ingredients are in the crock pot, you can walk away and get on with your day and your errands. When you walk back into your kitchen, you have a delicious meal without that time-consuming pot watching. That's certainly a time saver.

There is no such thing as a quick stop at the grocery store. But, when you're running late and there is no dinner planned, you think you can do just that - make a quick stop. After a half hour or more wandering around the aisles of the grocery store, you find yourself grabbing a few prepackaged meals and heading home. Now, you've not only put off dinner until later, but you've spent money on food you didn't really want to eat, or feed your family. With a crock pot meal planned and shopped for ahead of time, you can add that 30 minutes on to the end of your busy day and spend it with your family, instead of running around the grocery store.

Save Money With a Crock Pot - You've got to cook dinner anyway, so how can cooking in a crock pot save money? Food is food - it all costs the same, right? But, there are a couple ways that you can save money both in the grocery store and on your energy bill when you use a crock pot.

March right past those expensive cuts of meat in your grocery store's meat department and head over to the budget cuts. Yes, those less expensive cuts of meat such as rump roasts, pork shoulders, and briskets make the perfect choice for a crock pot meal. Why? Because more expensive cuts tend to cook apart in a crock pot, losing their texture very quickly. Budget cuts with more sinew and other connective tissue hold up better, while those fibers break down in the crock pots environment, ending up with a perfectly tender and succulent meat. The slow, low cooking method is perfect for less expensive cuts of meat, while the moisture trapped inside the crock pot keeps the meat juicy. You can provide a wonderful meal for your family without spending the extra money on expensive ingredients!

If you consider your crock pot a "miniature oven", you're on your way to understanding why your crock pot will save money on your energy bill. Given that an oven commits about 2500 watts to a meal, while a crock pot only commits about 200 watts, you can see where you would save energy. Even if you consider that you'll be cooking a pot roast in a crock pot for twice as long as in the oven, you're still saving total energy used. Your oven would use 10 kWh to cook a 3 hour pot roast, while your crock pot would use 1.2 kWh to cook the same pot roast for 6 hours. Even roughly estimated, there's no denying the fact that your oven uses a whole lot more energy than your crock pot.

When the evening rush is upon you, it's not the time to start panicking about dinner. If you've ever had to call the spouse to stop and pick up dinner somewhere, you know how much money that just cost you. Your family food budget cannot survive many of those last minute meal decisions. Instead, as you're driving the family around after work and school, stopping for piano lessons, shopping for some school event, or running any of those last minute errands, your crock pot can be working for you, cooking a great, hearty meal for the whole family to enjoy when you finally come in through the door. No call for take out, no more money wasted on instant meals!

Save Both Time and Money With a Crock Pot - Cooking two or three meals at a time in a big crock pot is definitely a time and money saver. Preparing once and eating twice saves time in the kitchen, and having leftovers for other meals or for lunches saves money. Also, having your crock pot cooking for 8 hours and preparing two meals during that time saves on your energy usage. Time spent running around at lunch hour buying a lunch can now be spent on something more productive, not to mention the money saved by not buying your lunch out. How would you like to cook on Monday and not have to think about what to make the rest of the week?

These arguments for cooking with a crock pot to save both time and money should be sufficient to convince most folks. If that's not enough, consider your sanity. You have a busy family and when everyone is hollering about what's for dinner, you can finally relax and say "look in the crock pot! - 33383

Custom Cabinet Tips: How To Save Money On Your Next Custom Cabinet Job By Selecting The Equipped Shop.

By Keith Sorenson

If I were to ask you to associate custom cabinets with affordable what would you say? Well, for many of us that have been around for a bit we have this idea that the phrases custom cabinets are truly that ideal place of destination for our kitchen should we have an unlimited amount of money to spend. Ironically, despite the increase in supplies, the cost of custom cabinets is decreasing and a lot of this has to do with the change to the process.

This article is about small business going hi-tech in order to improve on price and maintain a custom service for their clients. I support small businesses abroad and I applause LyndenCraft for making such a step in their production process. I support entrepreneurs. More importantly those with such a unique skill set that when combined with technology can offer you some of the best products around. What used to be accomplished with manual labor, a table saw, keen eye and a steady hand is now accomplished on a 4 foot by 8 foot flat surface and robotic router. Imagine pieces being cut within 1/100th of an inch in accuracy. Accurate, safe for the employees and more importantly for you and I it costs less because less man hours are required.

Local shop owner, Steve Oates, shared this story, "I received a phone call from a local resident. She was anxious to receive a fast quote over the phone for some custom cabinets. In particular, she was wanting a custom island to match her kitchen cabinets. According to the caller, Home Depo_ quoted her about $6,700 for a kitchen island including a non-granite countertop. After speaking with her I shared that I felt pretty sure we could probably save her at least $1,400. But I went one step further. I even included granite with her cabinets and she could choose up to 20 styles." She was surprised as I was when he shared the story.

Local custom cabinet shop owner, Steve Oates, unfolded this recent example, "My phone rang last week and one struggling Mom called to obtain a verbal quote. I could tell she was anxious to obtain a quote fast so I asked a few questions. Reading from a recent quote from "Home Depo" she said, "can you beat $6,700?" In my mind I'm wondering what she asked for that drove the cost up a bit but after talking a few minutes I instantly knew the cause. She was trying to adjust a manufacturer's standard cabinet to make it customized." "I talked with her a few more minutes then shared that I felt we could save her about $1,400 and in addition include a granite top. I even gave her up to 20 granite types to choose from. Needless to say the client was very pleased and surprised."

In closing Steve talked some more about the custom service included with his custom cabinets. He said, "I try to explain to all my clients wishing to purchase any custom cabinet project. I firmly believe the process is equally important to the product! Too many of my clients have told horror stories of contractors that are great at sales, horrible at delivery, and just ok with the end product. We wish to be fantastic to work with from the moment we enter the home until the last tool is removed and we work hard to that end. We are committed to creating such a pleasant experience that they can't wait to tell their friends. In my mind, it's even more important that their new kitchen becomes a center piece for gatherings as they share their home with others and create a sense of community. - 33383
